Women’s Volleyball Now 4-0 After 3-0 Win At Marshall – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team picked up win number four in four tries with a 3-0 (15-13, 15-5, 15-12) win at Marshall (0-5). Sue Calligaris (So., Palermo, Italy/Liceo Linguistico) had a team-high 13 kills combined with 10 digs to pace the Buckeye attack. Dana Stearns (Sr., Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) and Suzie Stiling (So., Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) added 12 kills each while Shelly Draeger (So., Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) had 11. Erin Treadway (Fr., Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) and Anne Botica (Jr., Windsor, Ont./St. Joseph) each contributed nine kills in OSU’s third shutout of the season. Heidi Kuethe had a match-high 17 kills for Marshall with Wendy Williams adding 16.
Buckeye setter Katie Virtue (So., St. Charles, Ill./St. Francis) had 42 assists in the match midway in the third game (OSU leading 8-5) when she ran into the scoring table breaking an ad panel and cutting her right knee. She required four stitches and was replaced by Heather Whalen (Fr., Kalamazoo, Mich./Parchment) for the rest of the match. Whalen completed the game collecting 17 assists in her first appearance as a setter.
Ohio State hit .308 as a team for the match to .273 for Marshall. The Buckeyes had the advantage in kills (70-49), digs (50-43) and ace serves (5-1) while the Thundering Herd had a five to three advantage in team blocks.
The Ohio News Network will broadcast the Marshall match at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday (Sept. 6).
The Buckeyes return home this weekend for the Buckeye Invitational. At 5 p.m. Saturday, Illinois State (2-1) plays Kentucky (1-3) while Ohio State (4-0) host Toledo (2-1) in the second match. Sunday’s third place match begins at noon with the championship match scheduled at 2 p.m. Both Ohio State matches will be carried live by the Ohio News Network.
