COLUMBUS, Ohio – After capturing the Temple Volleyball Classic championship last weekend, Ohio State (3-0) returns to the road to face Marshall (0-4) at 7 p.m. Tuesday. That match will be one of seven cablecasts by the Ohio News Network. It will be replayed Wednesday at 11:30 p.m. Arica Robbins will call the play-by-play with former OSU All-America setter Audrey (DiPronio) Flaugh handling the color. The Buckeyes will open the home season Saturday in the Buckeye Invitational. Saturday Illinois State (2-1) will face Kentucky (1-2) at 5 p.m. and Ohio State plays Toledo (2-1) at 7 p.m. The consolation match Sunday will be at noon with the championship match scheduled at 2 p.m. Both Ohio State matches are scheduled to be carried live by ONN.
LOOKING AT THE BUCKEYES
Offensively Shelly Draeger (So., Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) has a team-high 35 kills (3.50 per game) with Sue Calligaris (So., Palermo, Italy/Liceo Linguistico) at 32 (3.20). Calligaris is hitting a team-high .433 with Dana Stearns (Sr., Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) at .385. Anne Botica (Jr., Windsor, Ont./St. Joseph) has eight ace serves (1.14) and Suzie Stiling (So., Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) four (.40). Katie Virtue (So., St. Charles, Ill./St. Francis) has 119 assists (11.9). Defensively Draeger has a team-high 21 digs (2.1) with Calligaris and Nikki Cisco (Jr., Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) at 17 (1.7) each. At the net Calligaris leads the team with 12-assist blocks (1.2) followed by Stearns with 11 (1.1).
As a team Ohio State is hitting .268 and averages 14.7 kills per game. The Buckeyes are averaging 2.39 blocks, 12.0 digs and 2.40 aces per game. OSU opponents are hitting .134 and average 10.7 kills per game. Opponents average 1.8 blocks, 9.3 digs and 0.8 aces per game.
CLASSIC CHAMPIONSHIP
With 3-0 wins over Colgate (15-3, 15-2, 15-8) and Seton Hall (15-5, 15-6, 15-4) and a 3-1 victory over host Temple (15-2, 10-15, 15-5, 15-11) Ohio State captured the championship of the Temple Volleyball Classic. Setter Katie Virtue was named the most valuable player of the Classic with Sue Calligaris selected to the all-tournament team.
SETON HALL WIN IS 400TH FOR STONE
Ohio State’s 3-0 win over Seton Hall was head coach Jim Stone’s 400th win with the Buckeyes. In his 19th season with the Buckeyes, Stone’s record is 401-181.
VIRTUE TAKES MVP HONORS
In leading the Buckeyes to three wins and the Temple Volleyball Classic championship, setter Katie Virtue was named to the Classic all-tournament team and was selected the Classic Most Valuable Player. In the three matches Virtue had 119 assists, 16 digs and nine blocks. In the final match against Temple, she had all five starters record double-figure kills.
BOTICA AND STILING ACE COLGATE
Anne Botica made the most of her start against Colgate serving a career-high five ace serves against the Red Raiders. Her previous high had been three, two times, the last against Purdue in 1999. Botica drew the starting assignment against Colgate when freshmen Erin Treadway (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) was unable to start because of illness. Suzie Stiling added a career-high three ace serves in the Colgate match. She had recorded two aces in a match twice before.
STEARNS NOTCHES NINE BLOCKS
With nine assist blocks against Temple, Dana Stearns equaled her career high for assist blocks for the third time. Stearns had a team-high 17 kills and hit .455 (17-7-33) against the Owls.
TELEVISION COVERAGE
Ten Ohio State matches are schedule to be telecast this season. The Buckeyes are scheduled for seven matches on the Ohio News Network. The matches are part of a 30-plus event package between Ohio State and ONN. The following matches comprise the volleyball package (broadcast times subject to change): at Marshall, Sept. 5 (replay Sept. 6, 11:30 p.m.), Toledo Sept. 9 (live), OSU’s match Sept. 10 (live), Cincinnati Sept. 12 (Sept. 12, 11:30 p.m.), Michigan Sept. 24 (live), Illinois Oct. 7 (Oct. 8, 1 p.m.), and Wisconsin Nov. 5 (Nov. 5, 11 p.m.). Ohio State has one of three Big Ten matches to be aired by ESPN2. OSU will host Indiana Oct. 21 with with broadcast Oct. 22 at 3:30 p.m. The Buckeyes will appear in two of the eight Big Ten matches to be carried by Fox Sports Chicago. OSU’s match at Iowa Oct. 14 will be broadcast at 4 p.m. Oct. 15 and the Buckeye contest at Penn State Nov. 18 will be broadcast at 4 p.m. Nov. 19.
LOOKING AT MARSHALL
The Thundering Herd is winless in four matches. Marshall lost 2-3 to Virginia Tech (17-15, 10-15, 15-7, 11-15, 15-17), 0-3 to Southwest Texas (5-15, 3-15, 10-15), 1-3 to North Carolina State (9-15, 6-15, 15-11, 8-15) and 2-3 to Appalachian State (7-15, 15-9, 8-15, 15-7, 5-15). Marshall’s Wendy Williams had 64 kills on the weekend for a 3.76 kills per game average. OSU leads the series with Marshall 2-0. The last meeting was in 1998. OSU won 15-1, 15-3, 15-1.

LOOKING AT TOLEDO
The Rockets opened the season with a 2-1 record at the Mark Twain Hotels Invitational hosted by Bradley. Toledo lost 1-3 to host Bradley (5-15, 4-15, 15-13, 4-15) and then defeated, by 3-0 scores, UW-Green Bay (15-6, 15-1, 18-16) and Memphis (15-4, 15-1, 15-10). Bitsy Mayhle had a team-high 51 kills (5.10 kpg) on the weekend. Ohio State leads the series with Toledo 6-0. The last meeting was in 1993, in Toledo, a 15-0, 15-10, 15-10 Buckeye win.

LOOKING AT ILLINOIS STATE
The Redbirds are 2-1 on the season taking second at the IKONH-Husky Classic. They defeated Montana 3-0 (15-6, 15-0, 16-14), lost to host Connecticut 0-3 (13-15, 13-15, 6-15) and defeated St. Peter’s 3-0 (15-9, 15-9, 15-10). Kendra Haselhorst is the team’s top hitter with 48 kills (5.33 kpg). The Redbirds have a 6-4 lead in the series with Ohio State. In the last meeting (1987) Illinois State defeated Ohio State 3-0 (15-4, 15-6, 15-10) in the Buckeye Invitational.

LOOKING AT KENTUCKY
The Wildcats are 1-2 prior to a Tuesday match with Louisville. At the University of Virginia Tournament Kentucky defeated William & Mary 3-2 (15-10, 9-15, 16-18, 15-13, 15-8, lost 0-3 to Georgetown (14-16, 12-15, 8-15) and 1-3 to Virginia (13-15, 8-15, 17-15, 7-15). Megan Weiskircher tops the team in kills with 36 (3.00 kpg). Ohio State leads the series with Kentucky 6-3. The teams last played in 1995 at the Colorado Powerbar Invitational. OSU won 3-0 (15-10, 15-9, 15-1).

HEAD COACH JIM STONE
Jim Stone is in his 19th year at Ohio State. He has a 401-181 (.689) record with the Buckeyes and is 228-99 (.697) in Big Ten play. His squads have won Big Ten championships in 1989, 1991 and 1994 and in the last 11 years has only finished below third twice. In the championship years, he was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year and in 1991 was the Volleyball Monthly Coach of the Year. For the last 11 years, OSU has participated in the NCAA Championships, advancing to the national semifinals in 1991 and 1994. Stone’s coaching career record includes three years at Wyoming (1979-1981). His 21-year career record is 451-223 (.669).

Head coach Jim Stone begins his 19th-year in the Big Ten at Ohio State. Closest to Stone is Mike Hebert of Minnesota who is entering his 18th season. He spent 14 years at Illinois and the last four at Minnesota.
NEXT UP FOR THE BUCKEYES
After a Tuesday Sept. 12 home match with Cincinnati, the Buckeyes will play at the Western Michigan Tournament facing Connecticut and Liberty Friday Sept. 15 and host Western Michigan Saturday Sept. 16.
