Women’s Volleyball Rallies To Defeat Wisconsin 3-2 – Ohio State Buckeyes

MADISON, Wis. – After trailing 0-2 in games to No. 10 Wisconsin, 19th-ranked Ohio State rallied to win the final three games to remain undefeated on the season at 13-0 and perfect in the Big Ten Conference at 3-0. The 14-16, 10-15, 15-11, 17-15, 15-12 Buckeye win dropped Wisconsin to 13-2 overall and 3-1 in the Big Ten. OSU hit .121 in game one and .131 in game two for Badger wins. OSU held on in the next three games hitting .305 in game three, .263 in game four and .250 in the fifth game to help secure the win.
Ohio State had five players with double-figure kills and six with double-figure digs in the match. Leading the Buckeyes in both categories was Anne Botica (Jr., Windsor, Ont./St. Joseph) with 27 kills and 28 digs, both career highs. Sue Calligaris (So., Palermo, Italy/Liceo Linguistico) had 20 kills and 13 digs with Dana Stearns (Sr., Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) adding 17 kills and 19 digs. Suzie Stiling (So., Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) added 16 kills with a team-high five blocks while Shelly Draeger (So., Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) had 12 kills and a career-high 16 digs. Badger Sherisa Livingston topped all players with a match-high 37 kills while Claudia Rodriguez added 16 and Jenny Maastricht 14.
Wisconsin took a 3-0 lead in game only to have OSU tie the game at five. The game was tied at nine and again at 10. The Buckeyes took an 11-10 lead off a UW error but an OSU error tied the game at 11. A Badger error gave OSU a 12-11 lead and a Botica kill put Ohio State up 13-11. After a UW sideout, an OSU error cut the Buckeye lead to 13-12 but a Draeger kill set game point for Ohio State at 14-12. A Livingston kill sided the ball to Wisconsin but OSU got its second game point attempt from a Draeger sideout kill. Wisconsin stopped the game point with a Maastricht kill and a solo block by Lizzy Fitzgerald cut the OSU lead to 14-13. Fitzgerald’s kill tied the game at 14. After an exchange of sideouts, a Buckeye error and a Maastricht kill gave Wisconsin a 16-14 win. Ohio State hit .121 for the game to .111 for Wisconsin. Botica had a team-high eight kills in the game for OSU to seven for UW’s Livingston. Wisconsin opened game two with a 5-0 lead. The Badgers expanded the lead to 8-1. Ohio State cut the lead to 8-4 but Wisconsin expanded the lead to 10-4. Kills by Botica and Draeger a Draeger blocks and two Badger errors closed the UW lead to 10-9. A Stearns kill tied the game at 10. Three kills by Erin Byrd and a Buckeye error put Wisconsin at game point at 14-10. OSU stopped three game points before an OSU error ended the game at 15-10. Wisconsin hit .254 for the game to .131 for Ohio State. UW’s Livingston had a game-high eight kills while Stearns had five and Botica four for OSU.
Wisconsin again opened a 5-0 lead for game three. A Botica kill and a UW error made it 5-2. A Byrd kill put UW ahead 6-2. A Botica kill and an ace serve by Katie Virtue (So., St. Charles, Ill./St. Francis) cut the Badger lead to 6-4. Kills by Fitzgerald and Livingston put Wisconsin ahead 8-4. A Draeger kill and a UW error cut the margin to 8-6. A Botica kill cut the lead to 8-7. A Rodriguez kill pushed the lead for Wisconsin to 9-7. OSU cut the lead to 9-8 on a Calligaris kill. A Livingston kill and a Buckeye error give Wisconsin an 11-8 lead. A Badger error and an ace serve by Stearns cut the lead to 11-10. A UW error tied the game at 11 and a kill by Stearns gives Ohio State the lead at 12-11. Three consecutive kills by Botica ended the game at 15-11. The UW game loss ended a 33 game winning streak for Wisconsin. Ohio State hit .322 for the game to .229 for Wisconsin. Botica had a game-high nine kills for OSU while UW’s Livingston had seven.
Ohio State opened game four with a 3-0 lead off two UW errors and a kill by Draeger. An OSU error cut the lead to 3-1. Ace serves by Draeger and Stiling and two Badger errors gave OSU a 7-1 lead. A kill by Lisa Zukowski and three OSU errors closed the OSU lead to 7-5. Back-to-back kills by Rodriguez tied the game at nine. Wisconsin took the lead with a Meggan Kohnen kill at 10-9. OSU tied the game at 10 with a Stearns kill. UW kills by Fitzgerald and Byrd put the Badgers ahead 12-10. A UW error cut the lead to one at 12-11. OSU tied the game at 12 with another Badger error. Back-to-back kills by Calligaris and Erin Treadway (Fr., Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) put Ohio State at game point at 14-12. A Buckeye service error returned the serve to Wisconsin and a block by Fitzgerald and Kohnen to close the lead to 14-13. A Maastricht kill tied the game at 14 and Fitzgerald’s kill gave Wisconsin a 15-14 lead and serving for the game. A sideout kill by Stiling stopped the game point and a Virtue kill tied the game at 15. A Treadway kill gave OSU a 16-15 lead and serving its second game point of the game. OSU closed the game with a block by Stiling and Treadway for a 17-15 win. The Badgers hit .281 for the game to .263 for Ohio State. UW’s Livingston had a game-high 10 kills while OSU’s Calligaris had a team-high six.
Wisconsin opened game five with a Livingston kill to go up 1-0. OSU’s Botica tied the game at one with a kill. A UW error put OSU ahead 2-1. Livingston’s kill for UW tied the game at two. OSU went ahead 3-2 on a kill by Stearns but Livingston countered to tie the game at three. OSU kills by Stiling and Botica gave OSU a 5-3 lead but a Livingston kill and an OSU error tied the game at five. An OSU kill by Calligaris and one by UW’s Maastricht tied the game at six. A Stiling kill and a Badger error put the Buckeyes ahead 8-6. A Maastricht kill and an OSU error tied the game at eight. Wisconsin took a 9-8 lead on a Maastricht kill but Botica replied with a kill to tie the game at nine. A Wisconsin error gave Ohio State a 10-9 lead. Treadway’s kill put Ohio State ahead 11-9 but a Rodriguez kill closed the margin to 11-10. Another Treadway kill put OSU up two at 12-10. An UW block by Rodriguez and Livingston cut the margin to one at 12-11. A Wisconsin error put OSU up 13-11 and a block by Stiling and Calligaris gave Ohio State its first match point at 14-11. Livingston responded with a kill to cut the lead to 14-12. OSU’s second match point attempt resulted in a Badger error ended the game at 15-12. For the game Ohio State hit .250 to .100 for Wisconsin. UW’s Livingston had a game-high five kills while OSU’s Botica had a team-high three with Stiling and Treadway adding two each.
For the match Ohio State hit .212 to .208 for Wisconsin. The Buckeyes had a 99-91 advantage in kill and a 108-97 margin in digs. OSU also outserved the Badgers six to three. Wisconsin had 20 blocks to nine for Ohio State. Fitzgerald (1-7) and Livingston (0-8) each had a match-high eight for the match. OSU setter Katie Virtue had a career-high 83 assists in the five-game match that lasted two hours and 34 minutes.
Ohio State completes the two-match road trip by facing Northwestern Saturday in Evanston.
