Women’s Volleyball Opens Ameritech Invitational With Win Over Connecticut – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – With Dana Stearns (Sr., Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) and Anne Botica (Jr., Windsor, Ont./St. Joseph) collecting 20 kills each, the Ohio State (8-0) women’s volleyball team won the opening match of the 2000 Ameritech Invitational at Western Michigan with a 3-0 (15-5, 15-13, 16-14) sweep of Connecticut (6-2). Suzie Stiling (So., Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) and Shelly Draeger (So., Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) added 11 kills each for the Buckeyes. Connecticut’s Stephanie Schindel had a team-high 18 kills for the Huskies with Laura Wooley adding 11.
Ohio State had five players with double-figure digs in the match. Botica collected a team-high 13 digs with Draeger adding 12 (career-high), Stearns 11 and Katie Virtue (So., St. Charles, Ill./St. Francis) and Sue Calligaris (So., Palermo, Italy/Liceo Linguistico) 10 each. Virtue also had a career-high five ace serves in the match while in blocking, Stearns (4 assists) and Calligaris (one solo, three assists) had four each.
For the match Ohio State hit .271 as a team with Connecticut at .197. The Buckeyes had a 72-57 margin in kills, a 68-58 advantage in digs and had an eight to one edge in ace serves. Both teams collected a total of seven team blocks.
The Buckeyes continue play in the tournament today at 5:30 when they face Liberty University (1-6). At 1 p.m. Saturday, Ohio State plays host Western Michigan (3-3) in the final match of the Invitational
