Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Cincinnati For Seventh Win, 15-11, 15-8, 15-6 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (7-0) women’s volleyball team behind a match-high 13 kills from Suzie Stiling (So., Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) and Shelly Draeger (So., Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) defeated Cincinnati 3-0 (15-11, 15-8, 15-6) Tuesday night in St. John Arena. OSU’s Dana Stearns (Sr., Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) and Sue Calligaris (So., Palermo, Italy/Liceo Linguistico) added 12 kills each for the Buckeyes. Tobi Kirchenwitz collected a team-high eight kills for Cincinnati (5-3) with Trish Ladusaw adding seven.
Ohio State opened a 5-2 lead in game one. Trailing 10-5, Cincinnati rallied to cut the lead to 10-8, closing to within two points (11-9) on a Ladusaw kill. OSU kills by Stearns, Draeger and Calligaris put OSU at game point (14-9). An Ashley Grooms kill stopped the game point while an OSU error and a kill by Laura Lauder cut the lead to 14-11. An OSU block by Stearns and Stiling was good on game point to end the game. The Buckeyes hit .381 for the game to .143 for the Bearcats.
OSU opened a 4-0 lead in game two expanding the lead to five at 7-2. Cincinnati cut the margin to 7-5 on an ace serve by Kirchenwitz. At 8-6 an ace serve by Erin Treadway (Fr., Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) and a kill by Stearns put Ohio State ahead 10-6. Two OSU errors cut the lead again to two (10-8). The Buckeyes then scored four consecutive points on two kills by Stiling, one by Anne Botica (Jr., Windsor, Ont./St. Joseph) and an ace serve by Katie Virtue (So., St. Charles, Ill./St. Francis). A Buckeye error stopped OSU’s game point attempt. Ohio State second game point attempt produced a Bearcat error and a 15-8 OSU win. Ohio State hit .257 for the game to .077 for Cincinnati. Four OSU kills and three Cincinnati errors gave Ohio State a 7-0 lead in game three. The Bearcats cut the lead to 10-6 but OSU kills by Virtue and Stiling and a UC error opened the OSU lead to 13-6. Another Stiling Kill and Botica’s fourth ace of the match closed the game at 15-6. The Buckeyes hit .410 for the game to .125 for Cincinnati.
For the match Ohio State hit .353 to .120 for Cincinnati. The Buckeyes had a 59-30 advantage in kills, a 48-36 margin in digs, a six-five edge in aces with both teams recording six blocks. Buckeyes Stearns and Draeger collected a match-high 10 digs each while Rachel Beran had a team-high eight for Cincinnati. Match-high honors for blocks went to OSU’s Stearns with four assists and UC’s Kirchenwitz with a solo and three assists.
Ohio State heads to the Ameritech Invitational in Kalamazoo, Mich. this weekend to play three matches. They face Connecticut (6-1) and Liberty (1-6) Friday and host Western Michigan (3-3) Saturday.
