Women’s Crew Finishes Ninth At 2000 NCAA Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

CAMDEN, N.J.–The Ohio State women’s crew finished the 2000 NCAA%^$Championships with a ninth-place showing at the Cooper River in Camden%^$County, N.J. Ending the day with a total of 13 points, the Buckeyes were%^$tied with Harvard, but Ohio State placed higher in the varsity eight race to%^$finish ninth in the team standings. Brown captured its second-consecutive%^$team championship after finishing first in the second varsity and varsity%^$eight races. Washington, Virginia, California and Michigan rounded out the%^$Top 5 in the team standings.%^$
“I am extremely proud of our team today,” Andy Teitelbaum, OSU head%^$coach, said. “Our finish was a great stepping stone for this team and shows%^$how great our program has become. Being selected to the NCAA’s and then%^$finishing ninth in the country, this is a great underscore for our season.%^$By being here at the championships, we now know what we are measuring%^$against and have been tested here. Now we will work on getting a first-place%^$finish for next year.”%^$
The varsity four crew opened the Petite Final ahead of Harvard,%^$Michigan and Michigan Sate, but the Buckeyes would fall back to third at the%^$1,000-meter mark. Ohio State battled back to finish second with a time of%^$8:12.50 behind Harvard (8:05.50). In the Grande Final, Washington’s crew%^$captured first place for the second-consecutive year with a time of 7:49.00.%^$
Against tough competition, the Buckeyes notched third place in the%^$second varsity Petite Final (7:16.70). Michigan State maintained its lead%^$throughout the race to capture first place with a time of 7:07.70. In the%^$Grande Final, Brown posted its first championship in the second varsity%^$eight final with a time of 6:48.39.%^$
In the Petite Final, Boston and Michigan State out-powered Ohio%^$State as the Buckeyes’ varsity eight crew posted fifth with a time of%^$6:58.10. In a great effort, Ohio State came back in the final 500 meters,%^$but was nipped by Northeastern at the finish line for fourth place. The%^$Buckeyes defeated Harvard, allowing Ohio state to place above the Black and%^$White in the final standings. In the Grande Final, Brown captured the%^$varsity eight race to place first (6:37.20) in the team competition.%^$
