COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s crew has been selected to participate in the 4th annual NCAA Championships, May 26-28 on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J. It is the first trip for the Buckeyes to the NCAA event as a team in the five-year history of the program at Ohio State.
In 1997, the varsity four boat (at large) made it to the NCAA Championships, finishing second. That particular Ohio State boat went 4-0 in dual competition and finished 16-3 overall that year.
Ohio State head coach Andy Teitelbaum started the Ohio State program from scratch in 1995 and has since built it into an NCAA Tournament-caliber squad.
“We thought we were close to sending our team last year,” Teitelbaum said. “It is exciting to be recognized this year. It is only one step toward our goal to win a national championship.”
The Buckeyes are one of just 10 elite programs selected from 129 nationally to attend the 2000 NCAA Championships. Five other schools will send a 1st Varsity Eight to the event. OSU’s 1st Varsity Eight boat is ranked No. 13 nationally.
Four of the schools sending the entire team hail from the Central Region, three are from the Big Ten (Ohio State, Michigan and Michigan State). Virginia is the fourth team. Other programs among the 10 teams selected are Brown, Boston University, Harvard and Princeton from the New England and Mid Atlantic Region, and California-Berkley and Washington from the West Region.
“There is a tremendous amount of great rowing in the middle of the country and the Big Ten,” Teitelbaum said. “The four teams selected from our region really demonstrates how good this region has become and how quickly.”
Oregon State, USC, Syracuse, Yale and Northeastern are the five schools sending a 1st Varsity Eight boat to the championships.
The 2000 Field: The championship is composed of 311 total competitors and provides for three events (I Eights, II Eights and Fours), each covering a 2,000-meter course. Ten teams are selected, and each team is required to field two boats of eight rowers each and one boat of four rowers. In addition, nine eight-women boats from institutions not represented in the team competition are selected. A minimum of 36 of the 311 berths will be allocated to participants from Divisions II and III. Dates and site: The championship will be May 26-28 at Cooper River Park, Camden County, New Jersey. Pennsylvania and the Eastern College Athletic Conference are the co-hosts.
