Men’s Golf Prepares For Big Ten Tourney – Ohio State Buckeyes

Columbus, Ohio– Ohio State placed fifth at the Fossum-Spartan Invitational, hosted by Michigan State at the Forest Akers Country Club in East Lansing, Mich. last weekend.
Kent State won the event with a score of 870, seven strokes ahead of runner-up Northwestern. Northwestern’s Jess Daley was the medalist with a score of 211, four shots under par and two lower than Rhode Island’s Jim Salinetti.
Mike Austin (Jr., Burton, Mich./Flint Powers Catholic), who shot four-over at 220 to tie for ninth place, was the top finisher for the Buckeyes.
Big Ten Championships Up Next
Ohio State will compete at the Big Ten Championships this Friday through Sunday in West Lafayette, Ind. The four-round tournament, hosted by Purdue, gets under way Friday at 12:30 p.m. The second and third rounds will be played on Saturday at 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., respectively. The final round will start at 8 a.m Sunday.
Last Year at Big Ten’s
Northwestern won the Big Ten Championship last year with a score of 1,131, edging host Minnesota’s 1,134. Ohio State placed fifth with a score of 1,157.
Michigan’s Michael Harris and Illinois’ Larry Nuger both shot a six-under par 278 and were co-medalists.
The Buckeyes were led by Chris Emanuel, who placed ninth at 285 and Albert Hromulak, who tied for 10th place with a score of 286.
Wagenseller Named Golfer of the Week
Wagenseller was recognized as the Big Ten Men’s golfer of the Week for the week of April 26 for his performance at the First Energy Intercollegiate Invitational in Akron, Ohio.
The invitational marked the third time in as many weeks that the sophomore posted a career-best result. Wagenseller was OSU’s first medalist since 1998.
Twenty-Two Titles For OSU
Ohio State has claimed 22 Big Ten Championships, more than any other team in the conference. The Buckeyes first won the event in 1928 under coach George Sargent. The Buckeyes won the event under Robert Kepler in 1945, `51’54 and `61.
Coach Jim Brown has guided OSU to 17 Big Ten championship titles in his 27 years at the helm of the program.
Under Brown, OSU won five straight titles from 1976-1980. After that streak was snapped in `81, the Buckeyes rebounded with eight consecutive titles from 1982-90.
Ohio State reclaimed dominance in the mid-nineties, winning the title from 1995-97.
Armour Claimed Individual Title in `98
Ryan Armour is the last Buckeye to win at the Big Ten’s. Armour was the medalist in 1998 with a score of 287, leading OSU to a second place finish, three strokes behind Indiana.
Sindelar Sets, Ties Records in `81
Joey Sindelar set the record for the lowest individual round in tournament history with a 271 in 1981. That same year Sindelar tied Purdue’s Fred Wampler (1950) for the lowest indiviudual round record at 64. Illinois’ Trevor Beard matched the mark in `91.
