The Ohio State Men’s Golf team shot (279-284-294+857) en route to a 10th place finish at the Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. OSU was led by David Wagenseller (So., Wilmington, Ohio), who tied for 16th place after finishing even (69-71-70=210). Fast Start at Gator Invite
Coach Jim Brown was pleased with the performance he saw from his players in the first two rounds of the Gator Invitational.
“I was really happy with the first two rounds,” he said. “We played as good as we could at this time of year.”
Brown also noted the final round showed that there is room for improvement.
“The last round we didn’t play as well,” he said. “I was disappointed because we made some progress. So we have to go back to the drawing board.”
Matlock Invitational up Next
The Buckeyes return to action March 6-7 at the Matlock Invitational in Lakeland, Fla. The Buckeyes look to build on the positive aspects from the Gator Invite. Like their first two Invitationals of the spring season, OSU will be the lone Northern representative. The Buckeyes will face some familiar competition in Lakeland.
“It will be another hard one because we have some tough teams,” Brown said. “It’s a really good tournament. We’ll face a lot of the teams we faced down there (at the Gator Invite).
Wagenseller gets back on Track
Sophomore David Wagenseller (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington) who averaged 72.6 strokes over eight rounds during the fall season to lead the Buckeyes, had a strong showing at the Gator Invite after struggling at the Ping Invitational. Wagenseller shot 80-76-78-234 to finish tied for 88th place in the first Invitational of the spring. In Gainesville, Wagenseller shot a 210 to finish tied for 16th place to lead OSU.
Collins, Austin match season lows
Justin Collins (Fr., Ironton, Ohio) and Mike Austin (Jr., Burton, Mich.) matched their season-low rounds in Gainesville. Collins shot a 68 in the opening round and Austin matched his best with 71 in the second round. Collins also shot 68 in the second round of the Red River Classic (Oct. 11-12, 1999). Austin shot a 71 in the second round of the Iron Duke Invitational (Oct. 17-18, 1999).
On the Road Again
Following the Matlock Invitational, OSU will travel to the Chris Schenkel Invitational (Statesboro, Ga., March 25-26) and the Marshal Invitational (April 7-8) before hosting the Kepler Intercollegiate Invitational (April 14-15).
