%^$Johnson earns 1st POW in 1999-00
%^$Ohio State senior center Ken Johnson (6-11, Detroit, Mich./Henry Ford) continued to build a case for Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year with his seven blocks against Purdue (1/29). He added 10 points and 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season and fourth of his career. His efforts against Purdue earned him the Big Ten Player of the Week, the first for an OSU player this year. Johnson now has 93 blocks on the season, which ranks third all-time at Ohio State for blocks in a season. Johnson also holds the single-season record, set last year when he swatted 100 shots as a junior. He is currently leading the nation in blocks per game at 5.5 per game. Johnson’s seven rejections vs. Purdue marked the sixth time this season he has turned back seven or more shots. He has 18 blocks in the last two games, including his OSU single-game record of 11 at St. John’s last week. Johnson’s defense is only part of the story. Offensively, he is much improved over last season when he connected on 52 percent of his shots. This season he has upped that mark to 58 percent after a 5-9 outing vs. the Boilermakers. He also recorded his third double-double of the season vs. Purdue with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Johnson is the first OSU player to receive a Big Ten Player of the Week Award since Feb. 22, 1999 when Scoonie Penn earned the honor.%^$

%^$Ohio State has compiled a 25-2 (.926) record over the last two season in Value City Arena. The Buckeyes were 14-1 in the inaugural season in VCA last season and so far boast an 11-1 record at home in 1999-00. In back-to-back season in which the Buckeyes have won at least 25 wins at home, the current record of 25-2 stands fourth all-time for home record in consecutive seasons. %^$In a rough-and-tumble battle that saw players hitting the deck on a regular basis, Ohio State got six points from Michael Redd in a late 13-2 run to get by Purdue, 68-59. With the Buckeyes on top 48-46 with 8:41 left, Redd, who finished with 14 points, hit a shot from the lane. After Penn hit a foul shot, Redd scored inside and then hit a fastbreak layup off an alley-oop from Penn. Penn then added a layup of his own before George Reese and Ken Johnson scored on rebound follows to put Ohio State ahead 61-48. The lead never dropped below seven again. The win was the sixth in a row for Ohio State, which has won 10 of its last 11. Play was stopped for 10 minutes in the second half while the officiating crew watched a video tape of the previous play. Just after Penn released a 3-pointer, a whistle away from the ball sent Brian Brown to the line. Brown hit both free throws to give Ohio State a 48-42 lead with 9:49 left. After Purdue inbounded and went through a sequence of its offense, Carson Cunningham was fouled. But before he could shoot the free throws, the officials knelt around a courtside monitor for several minutes. A Value City Arena capacity crowd of 19,100 booed and Keady and O’Brien paced the sidelines with exasperated expressions on their faces. The officials decided that Reese, not Brown, should have shot the foul shots at the other end. Brown’s points were taken off the scoreboard and Reese was sent to the line — 28 seconds having run off the clock since the earlier foul. After Reese made both, Cunningham then took his shots before play resumed. Johnson, the nation’s leading shot blocker, scored 10 points and had 10 rebounds to go with seven blocks. Reese added 10 points. Cunningham matched his season high with 19 points, with Brian Cardinal and Greg McQuay each scoring 11. Cardinal also had 11 rebounds.%^$

%^$For just the second time this season, the Wisconsin men’s basketball team lost at the Kohl Center, dropping a 61-55 decision to Iowa1 in front of a sellout crowd of 17,142. Mark Vershaw lad the Badgers with 18 points, 16 of those coming in the second half. Kirk Penney hit two free throws to put Wisconsin up 55-54 with 2:14 remaining but those would be the Badgers’ final points. After Iowa guard Dean Oliver was called for traveling, Oliver redeemed himself by picking Penney’s pocket and getting fouled. Oliver hit both free throws, putting Iowa ahead for good. Jacob Jaacks was fouled following a UW miss and made one free throw, giving the Badgers a chance to tie or go ahead. Penney got an open look along the left baseline but couldn’t knock down the shot. Jaacks then hit two free throws to ice the game for Iowa.%^$

%^$Ohio State has taken an Associated Press Top 25 ranking into 23 games against Wisconsin since 1950. The Buckeyes have come away with a 17-6 record (.739) in those games. %^$Lucas named to SI All-Century Team
%^$Ohio State basketball legend Jerry Lucas (1960-62) was selected to the Sports Illustrated All-Century Team, one of only five players to be so honored. Lucas is joined on the team by Bill Bradley (Princeton, 1963-65), David Thompson (N.C. State, 1973-75), Oscar Robertson (Cincinnati 1958-60) and Lew Alcindor (UCLA, 1967-69). Lucas averaged 24.3 points a game in his OSU career and an astounding 17.2 rebounds a contest. He was a three-time All-America selection and the Big Ten’s only three-time player of the year. Lucas’ 1,411 career rebounds stands as the career record. His 17.2 average also is a career record. He averaged 17.8 rebounds as a senior, which stands as the OSU single season record.%^$

%^$Senior guard Scoonie Penn was named to the Associated Press Preseason First Team All-America team. Penn joins Mateen Cleaves, Michigan State, Terence Morris, Maryland, Chris Porter, Auburn and Quentin Richardson, DePaul.%^$
%^$VCA sold out for 1999-00 Big Ten season
%^$The entire 1999-00 home Big Ten men’s basketball season at Value City Arena is sold out. All 19,100 seats are sold this year, including 4,000 student season tickets. A total of 10,000 student season ticket applications were submitted for the 4,000 available seats. Split season tickets were distributed to 8,000 students who submitted applications this year. Last season 650 student season tickets were sold. The Buckeyes averaged 17,228 fans last season. Ohio State was 14-1 in its first season a VCA.%^$
%^$Buckeyes sign three for 2000-01
%^$Jim O’Brien, Ohio State head men’s basketball coach, announced the signing of three highly recruited players to be added to the Buckeye program. Matt Marinchick (Hudson, Ohio), Velimir Radinovic (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) and Zach Williams (Middle Village, N.Y.) all signed letters of intent Nov. 11.%^$
%^$Marinchick (Ma-RIN-chick), a 6-10 center from Hudson (Ohio) H.S. is ranked No. 20 nationally at his position by Athlons Sports. He led his high school team with 12.8 points per game as a junior.%^$
%^$Radinovic (VEL-ah-mere Ra-DIN-o-vich) is a 7-0 center/forward from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Last season, he averaged 16 points and 12 rebounds at T.A. Blakelock High School in Toronto.%^$
%^$Williams, a 6-6 power forward comes to Ohio State as the No. 4-ranked player in New York. Williams, of Christ the King High School, averaged 15 pts. and 8 rebs on his high school team that was ranked No. 3 in the nation last season%^$

%^$Ohio State senior guard Scoonie Penn was selected as the preseason Big Ten Player of the Year by the league coaches during the conference-sponsored media day.%^$
%^$Michigan State senior Mateen Cleaves was selected by the Big Ten media as its preseason player of the year candidate. Ironically, the coaches tabbed Cleaves the Big Ten Player of the Year at the conclusion of last season while the media selected Penn. Penn along with OSU junior Michael Redd (Columbus, Ohio/West) were both selected as first team all-conference members by both the media and coaches.%^$
%^$The coaches also added Cleaves and Morris Peterson of Michigan State to the first team along with A.J. Guyton of Indiana. The media selected a similar first team but replaced Guyton with Cory Bradford of Illinois. League coaches picked Michigan State to win the conference this year followed by Ohio State, Illinois, Purdue and Indiana. The media picked MSU, Ohio State and Illinois as its top three.%^$
%^$Redd, Penn named OSU captains
%^$Senior Scoonie Penn and junior Michael Redd were named team captains during preseason camp. It will be the second season Penn has served in that capacity at Ohio State. He along with seniors Neshaun Coleman and Jason Singleton served last season. Redd will be serving his first season as an OSU captain.%^$

Some of the publications or preseason pollsters who have deemed Penn among the nation’s best include: Sport Magazine, Athlon Sports, Basketball Times, Street & Smith’s and Blue Ribbon. Lindy’s picks Penn and junior Michael Redd as First Team all-Big Ten Conference selections. Redd has been consistently deemed a second team nomination in most of the preseason publications.
