Men’s Tennis Players Into Finals of Local Tournament – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio– Members of the Ohio State men’s tennis team participated and advanced in the Wickertree Holiday Classic held at the Wickertree Tennis Club in Columbus Friday. The members are participating as individuals and are under no guidance from their coaches.
In doubles play, all three sets of Buckeye players reached the quarterfinal round. Leading the way was the No. 2 seeded team of Chris Porter (Sr., Canton, Ohio) and Andrew Carlson (Sr., Gambrills, Md.). Porter and Carlson into the finals after defeating the No. 4 seed team of David Paradzik and D.J. Spice, 7-5, 7-5. They will meet the winner of No. 3 Bob Wellstein (Sr., Perrysburg, Ohio) and Derek DeFalco (Sr., Maumee, Ohio) and No. 1 Wynn Criswell and Matt Pledger in the finals at 1 p.m. Saturday. DeFalco and Wellstein advanced to the semifinals after defeating No. 8 Lee Hays and Pete Tabernik, 6-4, 6-1.
Also in doubles play, the No. 5 team of B.J. Munroe (Sr., Freeport, Bahamas) and recent OSU signee Adrian Bohane (Fr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) reached the quarterfinals before falling 6-3, 6-2, to the No. 1 team of Criswell and Pledger.
In singles action, seven Buckeyes entered action in the open event with three players reaching the semifinals. No. 4 Bohane led the way with a 6-2, 7-6(5) defeat of No. 7 Wellstein to reach the finals. He will battle No. 1 Ed Carter, a 7-6(2), 2-6, 6-4 victor over No. 8 Vince Ng (So., Broadview Heights, Ohio), in the 11 a.m. final Saturday.
Other Buckeyes in the main draw were No. 10 Ben Kirksey (Fr., Canton, Ohio), who advanced to the third round before falling to No. 1 Carter 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-2, No. 11 Brenton Contini (Fr., Dover, Ohio), defeated in the second round, 7-6(4), 6-3, by Matt Poulos, No. 6 DeFalco fell in the third round, also to Poulos, 7-6(8), 6-4, and No. 9 Munroe, defeated 6-3, 6-4 by Chad Camper in the second round.
In other holiday tournament action, Jonathon Scale (So., Acworth, Ga.) advanced to the second round of the Georgia Tech Holiday Tennis Challenge before falling to Jackie Jenkins, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1. He finished the tournament with an overall record of 1-1.
The OSU team will begin its spring schedule Jan. 13-15 at Ann Arbor, Mich. in the Big Ten Indoor Championships.
