COLUMBUS, Ohio – %^$The 13th-ranked Ohio State women’s volleyball team put up great numbers on the scoresheet, except where it counted as No. 5 Wisconsin (23-2 overall, 13-1 Big Ten) defeated Ohio State (21-3, 11-3) in a four-game classic. The 7-15, 15-13, 16-14, 15-11 Badger win saw Wisconsin win only one statistical category, an 87-85 advantage in kills. Ohio State outhit Wisconsin .314 to .277, the best opponent output against the Badgers this season and is the only team to hit over .300 against Wisconsin. OSU also had a 13-4 advantage in ace serves, a 78-74 margin in digs and outblocked Wisconsin, 10-6.%^$
%^$Badger Jenny Maastricht had a match-high 29 kills for Wisconsin with Sherisa Livingston adding 27 and Meggan Kohnen 11. Ohio State got an outstanding performance from Suzie Stiling (So., Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) with a career-high 26 kills, while hitting .523. Stiling was one of five Buckeyes in double-figure kills in the match. Others included Sue Calligaris (So., Palermo, Italy/Liceo Linguistico) with 18, Anne Botica (Jr., Windsor, Ont./St. Joseph) 16 and 11 from Dana Stearns (Sr., Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) and Shelly Draeger (So., Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran).%^$
%^$Ohio State used a .542 hitting percentage in game one to capture a 15-7 win. Wisconsin opened with a 3-0 lead but a Stearns kill gave OSU a 4-3 lead. Tied at five, two Botica kills and an UW error gave the Buckeyes an 8-5 lead. Leading 11-5, kills by Lizzy Fitzgerald and Maastricht cut the lead to 11-7 but a kill by Katie Virtue (So., St. Charles, Ill./St. Francis), two aces by Draeger and a block by Stiling and Virtue closed the game at 15-7.%^$
%^$Wisconsin held a 4-1 lead in game two before OSU made a four-point run to take a 5-4 lead. In a close game that saw five more ties, the last at 13 on a Maastricht kill, a Buckeye error set game point for Wisconsin at 14-13. The Buckeyes held off three game points before a Maastrich kill closed the game at 15-13. Wisconsin hit .239 for the game to .114 for Ohio State.%^$
%^$Ohio State held an 8-0 lead in game three and was ahead 10-3 before a Lisa Zukowski kill and an ace by Sara Urbanek made it 10-5. A Maastricht kill and an OSU error cut the lead to 10-7. A Livingston kill and an ace by Urbanek cut the lead to 10-9. A Wisconsin error made it 11-10 OSU, but a Buckeye error tied the game at 11. OSU went ahead 12-11 on a Badger error. A Buckeye error tied the game at 13. Wisconsin led 13-12 on a Maastricht ace serve. A Badger error tied the game at 13. OSU took a 14-13 lead on a Stiling kill and failed to score on two game points. A Buckeye error tied the game at 14. Maastrich gave Wisconsin a 15-14 lead with a kill. The Buckeyes stopped Wisconsin’s first game point but a Maastricht kill ended the game at 16-14. The Badgers hit .292 for the game to .365 for Ohio State.%^$
%^$Ohio State had 2-0 and 6-4 leads in game four. The Badgers scored the next 10 points to reach match point at 14-6. OSU sided out on three game points and scored five consecutive points to cut the lead to 14-11. OSU’s run included a Virtue kill, two Draeger aces, a block by Stiling and Virtue and a Badger error. Maastricht sided out with a kill and a Buckeye error on Wisconsin’s fourth game point ended the match at 15-11. Wisconsin hit .302 for the game to .179 for Ohio State.%^$
%^$The Buckeyes have the next four matches on the road. OSU faces Michigan Friday, Nov. 10 and Michigan State, Saturday, Nov. 11.
