COLUMBUS, Ohio – %^$The 13th-ranked Ohio State women’s volleyball team behind a match-high 12 kills from Dana Stearns (Sr., Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) defeated Northwestern (4-20 overall, 1-13 Big Ten) in a three-game sweep (15-1, 15-9, 15-13). Ohio State’s (21-2, 11-2) Shelly Draeger (So., Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) added 11 kills and hit a career-high .556 percentage with one error in 18 attempts. Anne Botica (Jr., Windsor, Ont./St. Joseph) contributed 10 kills for the Buckeyes. Wildcat Erika Lange had a team-high 10 kills for Northwestern.%^$
%^$Ohio State opened game one with a 3-0 lead off two Wildcat errors and a kill by Sue Calligaris (So., Palermo, Italy/Liceo Linguistico). Northwestern scored its lone point of the game off an OSU error (3-1). A Northwestern error, a kill and ace serve by Draeger and a block by Botica and Suzie Stiling (So., Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) put OSU ahead 7-1. Kills by Calligaris and Botica and four Wildcat errors gave OSU a 13-1 lead. A Northwestern error set game point and an ace by Botica ended the game at 15-1. Ohio State hit .500 for the game to -.105 for Northwestern%^$
%^$The Buckeyes scored five consecutive points to open game two with kills by Calligaris and Stearns, an ace serve by Katie Virtue (So., St. Charles, Ill./St. Francis) at two Northwestern errors. OSU added kills by Draeger and Calligaris to extend the lead to 7-0. A kill by Draeger and two from Stiling along with two Wildcat errors gave Ohio State a 12-0 lead. Northwestern responded with four kills by Carmen Burbach, an ace by Cassie McKnight and an OSU error to cut the lead to 12-6. A Calligaris ace put the lead to 13-6. Three Buckeye errors cut the lead to 13-9. A kill by Draeger set game point at 14-9 and a Wildcat error ended the game at 14-9. The Buckeyes hit .368 in the game to .200 for Northwestern.%^$
%^$Northwestern opened game three with four consecutive points off an OSU error, an ace by Jill Fantozzi, a block by Lange and McKnight and a block by Lange and Adriana Ruhl. OSU tied the game at four with an ace by Stearns, two Calligaris kills and a Botica kill. The Buckeyes took a 6-4 lead off two Northwestern errors. The Wildcats tied the game at six off two Ohio State errors. A Stearns kill put OSU ahead 7-6. A Northwestern error and a Botica kill expanded the lead to 9-6. The Wildcats made it 9-7 on a block by Lange and McKnight. An OSU error and a kill by Lange tied the game at nine. A Buckeye error put Northwestern ahead 10-9. OSU tied the game at 10 with a kill by Draeger. A block by Stiling and Virtue and a Wildcat error put Ohio State ahead 12-10. A kill by NU’s Sarah Ballog cut the OSU lead to 12-11 and a Buckeye error tied the game at 12. A Wildcat error gave OSU a 13-12 lead, but a Buckeye error tied the game at 13. Two Northwestern errors for points ended the game at 15-13 for Ohio State. OSU hit .224 for the game to .122 for Northwestern.%^$
%^$For the match Ohio State hit .324 to .100 for Northwestern. The Buckeyes had a 52-32 advantage in kills and a 31-25 margin in digs. OSU also outserved the Wildcats five to two. Northwestern had the advantage in blocks eight to four. OSU’s Virtue had 30 assists in the match with Heather Whalen (Fr., Kalamazoo, Mich./Parchment) adding 11.%^$
%^$Ohio State hosts No. 5 Wisconsin (22-2, 12-1), Sunday at 2 p.m., who is atop the Big Ten standings. Ohio State is currently tied for second with No. 7 Minnesota (21-1, 10-2, prior to a Friday match vs. Indiana).
