BOSTON, Mass. – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team fell to Northeastern, 3-0, Sunday afternoon in the non-conference series finale at Matthews Arena. Following the weekend series split, the Buckeyes are 5-6-2 overall and 3-3-2 in the WCHA. The Huskies improve to 6-2-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the ECAC.
The Huskies capitalized on two OSU penalties in the first stanza. Seconds after Emma Laaksonen (Fr., Espoo, Finland/Makelanrinteen) was whistled for obstruction/interference at 9:24, NU’s Lisa Giovanelli converted to put the Huskies on the board first. With 2:04 remaining in the first period, Jeanne Chapple (Fr., Vadnais Heights, Minn./Moundsview) received a two-minute minor for interference and gave the Huskies a 5-on-4 advantage. Jennifer Santerre scored a power-play goal at 19:25, her first of the season.
At 7:02 in the second period, NUdefender Jessica Ferwerda fired the puck from point-blank range past OSU goalie April Stojak (So., Kent, Ohio/Shattuck St. Mary’s) to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead going into the second intermission.
The Buckeyes earned two 5-on-3 power-play opportunities, one at 5:27 and the other at 16:40 in the third stanza, but were unable to convert. Despite outshooting the Huskies, 14-5, in the third, OSU could not solve NU goalie Erica Silva.
OSU was unable to convert on eight power-play opportunites, while NU went 2-for-5 with the advantage.
The Buckeyes held the Huskies to just four shots in the second period and outshot NU, 45-20. Stojak recorded 17 saves in the losing effort. NU’s Silva stopped 45 Buckeye shots.
Ohio State returns home next weekend for the first time since Nov. 11 to take on defending WCHA champion Minnesota-Duluth in a two-game series. The Buckeyes and Bulldogs square off at 7:05 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1 and 7:05 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2 at the OSU Ice Arena.
