No. 17 Women’s Volleyball Defeats Indiana 3-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 17th-ranked Ohio State (22-5 overall, 12-5 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team, behind freshman setter Heather Whalen (Kalamazoo, Mich./Parchment) defeated Indiana 3-1 (15-4, 8-15, 16-14, 15-7) in University Gym on the Indiana campus. Whalen started in place of OSU’s Katie Virtue (So., St. Charles, Ill./St. Francis) who was held out with a stress fracture in her left foot. Sue Calligaris (So., Palermo, Italy/Liceo Linguistico) had a team-high 19 kills with Anne Botica (Jr., Windsor, Ont./St. Joseph) and Suzie Stiling (So., Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) adding 16 each with Dana Stearns (Sr., Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) contributing 10. Whalen produced a career-highs of 54 assists and 14 digs for the Buckeyes. IU’s Amanda Welter scored a match-high 25 kills for the Hoosiers with Hilary Toivonen adding 12 with Melissa Brewer and Monique Pritz 11 each.
Indiana held a 1-0 lead in game one before Ohio State scored the next 12 points and went on to a 15-4 win. OSU hit .394 in the game to .128 for Indiana.
Game two saw Indiana break a 5-5 tie with two kills by Toivonen and one by Welter to open an 8-5 lead. Indiana built an 13-6 lead. OSU held off two game points at 14-7 and one at 14-8 before a kill by Brewer ended the game at 15-8. Indiana hit .469 for the game to .262 for Ohio State.
Game three saw the score tied six times. Ohio State broke a 7-7 tie with two kills by Draeger, a kill by Whalen and a block by Whalen and Stiling to take an 11-7 lead. An OSU error cut the lead to 11-8. A kill by Draeger and an IU error made the OSU margin 13-8. Three consecutive Indiana points off an ace by Laurie Gardner and two OSU errors cut the lead to 13-11. An IU block by Monique Pritz and Nicole Hill and an OSU error tied the game at 13. A Stiling kill put OSU at 14-13 serving game point. A block by Brewer and Toivonen tied the game at 14. Back-to-back kills by Botica ended the game at 16-14. The Buckeyes hit .227 for the game to .136 for the Hoosiers.
From a 3-3 tie in game four, OSU built a 7-3 lead with kills by Draeger and Botica and two Indiana errors. Toivonen made it 7-4 on an ace serve for Indiana. Kills by Botica and Calligaris pushed the lead to 9-4. A Calligaris ace serve and two IU errors expanded the lead to 12-4. Gardner’s kill cut the OSU lead to 12-5. A solo block by Stiling put OSU ahead 13-5 and a kill by Stearns set match point at 14-5. Indiana held off several match points before two kills by IU’s Pritz cut the lead to 14-7. After an OSU sideout, Draeger aced the serve for match point at 15-7. OSU hit .318 for the game to .160 for Indiana.
For the match, Ohio State hit .286 to IU’s .223. OSU had the advantage in kills, 78-72, digs, 82-78 and ace serves seven to three. The Hoosiers outblocked Ohio State ten to 9.5.
The Buckeyes continue on the road Saturday when they face No. 9 Penn State (24-5, 13-4) at 7:30 p.m.
