COLUMBUS, Ohio – %^$The 13th-ranked Ohio State (21-5 overall, 11-5 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team lost its third consecutive match in a 3-1 (9-15, 15-6, 15-4, 15-12) decision to No. 25 Michigan State (15-10, 8-8). OSU’s Sue Calligaris (So., Palermo, Italy/Liceo Linguistico) scored a team-high 17 kills with Anne Botica (Jr., Windsor, Ont./St. Joseph) adding 11. Dana Stearns (Sr., Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) and Shelly Draeger (So., Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) added ten kills each for the Buckeyes. MSU’s Sarah Gustin had a match-high 20 kills for the Spartans with Erin Hartley and Jenny Rood adding 18 each.%^$
%^$The Buckeyes opened the match with a 15-9 game one win. OSU hit .389 to .229 for the Spartans. Michigan State responded with 15-6, 15-4 wins in the next two games. The Spartans hit .471 in game two to OSU’s .150 in game two and outhit the Buckeyes .429 to -.063 in game three. Michigan State closed the match with a 15-12 win in game three. Ohio State had a 7-3 lead in the game and held a 12-11 lead before the Spartans scored the final four points to take the game. MSU hit .353 in game four to OSU’s .212.%^$
%^$For the match Michigan State hit .351 to OSU’s .181. The Spartans had a 73-59 advantage in kill, a 60-52 margin in digs and outblocked Ohio State 15-7. The Buckeyes outserved Michigan State four to three.%^$
%^$Heather Whalen (Fr., Kalamazoo, Mich./Parchment) for Ohio State was given the call at setter for the match as Katie Virtue (So., St. Charles, Ill./St. Francis) was held out. Virtue had seen action only in matches for the last three weeks.%^$
%^$Ohio State continues on the road next week with matches at Indiana Friday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. and Penn State, Saturday, Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m.
