No. 13 Women’s Volleyball falls to Michigan in three games – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 13th-ranked Ohio State women’s volleyball team lost its second consecutive match, a 15-13, 15-9, 15-9 victory by Michigan (17-10 overall, 7-9 Big Ten). Ohio State (21-4, 11-4) had four players with double-figure kills topped by Sue Calligaris (So., Palermo, Italy/Liceo Linguistico) with 15. Shelly Draeger (So., Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) contributed 13 kills and a career-high 20 digs with Anne Botica (Jr., Windsor, Ont./St. Joseph) adding 11 and Dana Stearns (Sr., Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) 10. Michigan’s Sarah Behnke had a team-high 15 kills for the Wolverines with Chantel Reedus adding 14 and Alija Pittenger 10.
After a 1-0 OSU lead in game one, Michigan built up a lead of 7-3 before OSU tied the game at 10 with a kill by Stearns. OSU took an 11-10 lead on a block by Stiling and Stearns but a kill by Pittenger tied the game at 11. Another kill by Pittenger and ace serves by Katrina Lehman and Pittenger set game point for the Wolverines at 14-11. A side out kill by Stearns stopped Michigan’s first game point and the Buckeyes closed the lead to 14-13 on a solo block by Stearns and a block by Stearns and Calligaris. Erin Moore’s side out kill set Michigan’s second game point, which was the winner, off a block by Behnke and Moore for a 15-13 win. Michigan hit .175 for the game to OSU’s .118
Ohio State opened game two with a 3-0 lead. After ties at three, six, seven and eight Michigan took a 9-8 lead off a Buckeye error. The Wolverines went ahead 12-8 but a Calligaris kill cut the lead to 12-9. Kills by Moore, Behnke and an OSU error ended the game at 15-9. The Wolverines hit .267 for the game to .137 for Ohio State. The Buckeyes held a 2-1 lead in game three off a block by Stiling and Draeger. Michigan scored the next five points to take a 6-2 lead. Ohio State tied the game at six with a Draeger kill. Two kills by Reedus and an two OSU errors gave Michigan a 10-6 lead. A Stiling kill cut the lead to 10-7 but a kill by Lehman and two OSU errors put Michigan up 13-7. A Katie Virtue (So., St. Charles, Ill./St. Francis) ace serve and a Michigan error cut the lead to 13-9. A Buckeye error set match point at 14-9. Ohio State held off two match points before a Behnke kill closed the game at 15-9. For the game Michigan hit .231 to .111 for the Buckeyes.
For the match, Michigan hit .219 to OSU’s .121. The Wolverines had a four-three edge in aces and outblocked the Buckeyes 14-10. Ohio State had a 59-58 margin in kills and a 69-63 advantage in digs.
Ohio State faces Michigan State (14-10, 7-8) at 8 p.m. Saturday in East Lansing, Mich.

Ten kills by Dana Stearns gives her 1,247 for her career and moves her to seventh on the OSU career list passing Kristi Neuman (1983-86) with 1,242.
Six assist blocks by Dana Stearns gives her 360 for her career and moves her into a tie for second place on the OSU list tied with Sherri Helman (1993-96).
Dana Stearns’ seven total blocks (1-6) gives her 391 (31-360) for her career and moves her to third on the OSU career list. She passed Leisa Wissler (1988-91) and Sherri Rinker (1984-87), now tied for fifth, with 385 each and Jenny Jackson (1992-95), now fourth, with 389.
