COLUMBUS, Ohio – %^$The 11th-ranked Ohio State women’s volleyball team, behind a match-high 16 kills by Suzie Stiling (So., Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) extended its winning streak to 15 matches with a 3-0 (15-13, 15-7, 15-12) win over Purdue (9-9 overall, 1-5 Big Ten). Ohio State (15-0, 5-0) had three other players reach double-figure kills in the match. These included Dana Stearns (Sr., Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) with 15 kills, Sue Calligaris (So., Palermo, Italy/Liceo Linguistico) with 14 and Shelly Draeger (So., Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) with 11. Purdue’s Joanna Lowry had a team-high 15 kills for the Boilermakers with Julie Doud and Maegan Petersen adding 14 each. OSU’s Stiling, with her 16 kills, equaled her career-high for the third time and hit a career-high .577 (16-1-26) in the match.%^$
%^$Game one lasted 38 minutes and had the team combine for 138 attempts. Purdue had an 8-6 lead before kills by Draeger and Katie Virtue (So., St. Charles, Ill./St. Francis) tied the game at eight. Back-to-back kills by Stiling gave OSU a 10-8 lead. The score closed to 10-9 on an OSU error. A Boilermaker error and an ace serve by Draeger gave the Buckeyes a 12-9 lead. A Purdue error expanded the lead to 13-9. A Buckeye error made the score 13-10 and a Calligaris kill set game point at 14-10. A Lowey kill stopped the game point. OSU sided out on a Calligaris kill to serve its second game point but a Buckeye error sided out to Purdue. A Petersen kill cut the OSU lead to 14-11 and an OSU error made it 14-12. OSU sided out on a Draeger kill but a Petersen kill stopped OSU’s third game point attempt. A Buckeye error cut the lead to one at 14-13. A Stiling kill sided out for OSU and OSU’s fourth game point was stopped by a Doud kill. Stiling’s kill set up OSU’s fifth game point where a block by Stiling and Virtue ended the game at 15-13. Ohio State hit .275 for the game to .224. OSU’s Stiling had 10 kills in 14 attempts for the game, hitting .714.%^$
%^$After a 1-1 tied in game two, Purdue took a 2-1 lead on an OSU error. A Stiling kill tied the game at two and an ace by Stearns and a Purdue error gave OSU a 4-2 lead as Purdue called time out. A kill by Virtue and two Boilermaker errors gave Ohio State a 7-2 lead. A Lowry kill and an OSU error closed the lead to 7-4. A Purdue error made the lead 8-4 but an ace serve by Melissa Risher cut the lead to 8-5. Two Purdue errors have OSU a 10-5 lead. A kill by Stearns and a two Purdue errors put the lead at 13-5. Kills by Lowry and Laura Norton cut the lead to 13-7. A Purdue error set game point for OSU at 14-7. The Boilermakers stopped three game points before back-to-back kills by Draeger gave OSU the side out and game point at 15-7. For the game Ohio State hit .323 to .105 for Purdue.%^$
%^$Ohio State opened game three with a 1-0 lead. Purdue responded with a block by Tiffany Yoskey and Lowry, a ace by Doud and two OSU errors to take a 4-1 lead. A Virtue kill and three Purdue errors returned the lead to OSU at 5-4. A Buckeye error tied the game at five. A Stiling kill and two Boilermaker errors gave OSU an 8-5 lead. An OSU error cut the lead to 8-6 and an ace serve by Calligaris took the score to 9-6 and kills by Stiling and Stearns gave OSU an 11-6 lead. A Purdue ace by Petersen, a Lowry kill and an OSU error cut the lead to 11-9. Erin Treadway (Fr., Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) made the lead 12-9 with a kill. A Doud kill and an OSU error closed the lead to 12-11. Eryn Leach’s kill tied the game at 12, but an Anne Botica (Jr., Windsor, Ont./St. Joseph) kill, a block by Stearns and Botica and a Stearns’ kill closed the game at 15-12. Ohio State hit .155 for the game to .065 for Purdue.%^$
%^$For the match, Ohio State hit .243 to Purdue’s .133. The Buckeyes had a 72-49 advantage in kills, a 72-53 margin in digs and outserved Purdue 4-3. The Boilermakers outblocked OSU 13-11. OSU had five players with double-figure digs in the match led by Botica and Calligaris with 13. Others with double-figures included Virtue with 12, Nikki Cisco (Jr., Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman)%^$ with a season-high 11 and Draeger with 10. Purdue’s Melissa Risher collected 13 digs with Doud adding 10. Purdue’s blocking received a match-high nine assist blocks from Norton with Lowry adding five. For OSU, Stiling had five assists while Stearns had a solo and four assists.%^$
%^$The Buckeyes will face Illinois (10-6, 1-4) at 7 p.m. Saturday in St. John Arena.
