High prospects for second-year Buckeye
Ohio State’s Justin Collins will be a major asset coming into the 2000 fall season. Collins was the winner of the 2000 Jack Nicklaus Fall Low Qualifier with the lowest stroke average of 70.125.
In Collin’s freshman year at Ohio State he competed in 33 rounds with the Buckeyes and finished fifth on the team his first year in the collegiate ranks with an average of 75.7. He currently leads the Buckeyes this fall with a 76.0 per round average.
New Faces
Scott Anderson (Fr., Great Falls, Mont./Great Falls) and Kevin Hall (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Rita) are new additions to the Buckeye roster this season. Both freshman enter their inaugural season in the collegiate ranks with impressive resumes. Anderson was crowned Montana State Champion his sophomore and junior years and was runner-up last season. Brown has confidence they can contribute to the team immediately.
Experienced Team
OSU has its same top five players back from last season but head coach Jim Brown is looking for competition within the team for positions. In addition to Wagenseller and Collins, OSU returnees include Jason Oien, Doug Wade, Ryan Dennis (Jr., Stow, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit), and Scott Miller (Sr., Middletown, Ohio/Middletown). Oien was third on the team last season with a stroke average of 74.7 over 39 rounds. Dennis was a 10th of a stroke behind at 74.9.
Although Wade did not see any action with the Buckeyes last season his improvement put him in the lineup at the first tournament of the fall season at the Inverness Invitational. Wade also did well in this season’s Jack Nicklaus Fall Low Qualifier, finishing second with an average of 70.25.
Head Coach Jim Brown
Head coach Jim Brown is in his 28th season with the Buckeyes. He has had a longer OSU coaching career than any other coach on the staff right now.
Under Brown OSU has won 16 Big Ten titles and placed second in the conference eight times. Last season OSU won the First Energy Intercollegiate Invitational giving Brown 151 tournament wins in his career. Brown led the Buckeyes to a National Championship win in 1979.
