COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s varsity crew begins the fall season with the Head of the Ohio Regatta in Pittsburgh, Pa.
HEAD OF THE OHIO
The Buckeyes will compete in the championship eight event, with both first varisty eight boats making the trip. The varisty eight competition will get under way at 10:45 am, followed by the singles competition at 2:00 pm. The final race will feature the novice four boats at 2:45 pm.
“It’s the first race of the non-traditional season, but we want to prioritize the varisty eight squads,” Andy Teitelbaum, head coach said. “Fourteen of our 16 rowers will also compete in the afternoon events.”
The field of competition usually consists of approximately 25 schools. Colleges and universities that have participated in the past have included Brown, Virginia, Michigan, Michigan State and Cornell.
FALL OUTLOOK
After a fine season last year, Teitelbaum anitcipates the team this year to be even better. With much of his roster returning and with the addition of several strong student-athletes, the competition should improve over last year.
“While it’s only the fall, I think we have a lot of talented athletes on this team,” Teitelbaum said. “Athletically, we are a better team than we were a year ago. I expect that we are only going to improve from there.”
FALL Vs. SPRING
The difference between fall racing and spring racing is distance. Fall racing, referred to as head racing, is a 2.5- to 3.5-mile course. The spring course is a 2,000-meter sprint. Head racing involves twists and turns along the river, whereas spring races are the first to the finish line wins. Boats in head races are launched at 10-second intervals to eliminate crashes on the water.
STILL LOOKING?
Buckeye coaches and returning rowers were busy recruiting novice rowers the first week of the quarter. The crew stationed themselves across campus in an effort to advertise rowing to Ohio State’s female population. While the efforts have been good, the crew team is still looking for anyone who is interested in joining the crew.
“We are always looking for people to join the novice squad,” Teitelbaum said.
Those interested in boming a part of Ohio State’s women’s crew may call assistant coach Kristen Mermagen at (614) 292-7546.
LOOKING AHEAD
