COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 13th-ranked Ohio State women’s volleyball team, behind a match-high 13 kills from Suzie Stiling (So., Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) and 11 from Anne Botica (Jr., Windsor, Ont./St. Joseph) swept Purdue (11-13 overall, 3-5 Big Ten) 15-6, 15-5, 15-11 for OSU’s (20-2, 10-2) 20th win of the season. Boilermakers Joanna Lowry and Maegan Petersen had a team-high eight kills each for Purdue.
Ohio State opened game one with kills by Stiling and Sue Calligaris (So., Palermo, Italy/Liceo Linguistico) for a 2-0 lead. An OSU error made it 2-1 but the Buckeyes scored the next six points off two kills each from Shelly Draeger (So., Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) and Calligaris, an ace by Botica and a Purdue error. The Boilermakers made it 8-2 on a Eryn Leach kill. Two Purdue errors and a kill by Stearns put OSU ahead 11-2. An OSU error cut the lead to 11-3 but two Purdue errors and a block by Stiling and Calligaris set game point at 14-3. Two OSU errors and a kill by Peterson cut the lead to 14-6. On OSU’s fifth game point, a Calligaris kill closed the game at 15-6. Ohio State hit .389 to Purdue’s .150.
The Buckeyes opened game two with five consecutive points including two aces by Calligaris, kills by Botica and Draeger and a block by Stiling and Katie Virtue (So., St. Charles, Ill./St. Francis). Two Purdue errors, a kill by Botica and an ace serve by Nikki Cisco (Jr., Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) gave OSU a 9-0 lead. Purdue responded with five consecutive points from two aces from Lori Knicker, two kills from Lowry and a kill by Laura Norton. A Botica ace made it 10-5 for Ohio State and kills by Draeger and Stiling and a Purdue error made it 13-5. A Calligaris ace serve set game point at 14-5. OSU’s second game point was a kill by Stiling to finish the game at 15-5. The Buckeyes hit .417 for the game to .125 for the Boilermakers. Two kills by Stiling and another by Botica gave OSU a 3-0 lead in game three. A kill by Petersen and an OSU error cut the lead to 3-2. A kill by Draeger, a Purdue error and a block by Calligaris and Stiling made it 6-2. A Purdue block by Norton cut the lead to 6-3. OSU ran the score to 12-3 with six consecutive points. They included kills by Botica and Virtue and an ace from Calligaris to make it 9-3. A Stiling kill, a Purdue error and a block by Draeger complete the run. A Buckeye error made it 12-4 and a kill by Calligaris and a block from Stearns and Calligaris set game/match point at 14-4. An OSU service error stopped OSU’s first match point. Purdue responded with five consecutive points on a Julie Doud ace, two OSU errors and kills by Jenny Bova and Lowry to cut the lead to 14-9. OSU failed to score on two more match points. Purdue cut the lead to 14-11 on blocks by Lowry and Norton and Petersen and Norton. A Stiling kill sided out to Ohio State for its fourth match point, another Stiling kill, to end the game 15-11. Ohio State hit .135 for the game to .056 for Purdue.
For the match Ohio State hit .299 to Purdue’s .110. The Buckeyes had a 48-30 advantage in kills and a 44-23 margin in digs. OSU had a eight to seven edge in blocks and a seven-three margin in aces.
*OSU’s Sue Calligaris had a career-high four aces in the match. Her previous high was two, twice, the last against Toledo.
*OSU’s Dana Stearns had five kills in the match and now has 1,214 in her career. She moved to ninth on the OSU career kill list passing Trica Stragliotto (1993-96) with 1,211.
Ohio State returns home next week for matches against Northwestern and Wisconsin. The Buckeyes face Northwestern Friday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. and Wisconsin Sunday, Nov. 5 at 2 p.m.
