Women’s Volleyball Falls To Penn State In Five Games – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 11th-ranked Ohio State women’s volleyball team came back from a Penn State 2-1 lead to win the fourth game but could not sustain the charge in dropping the fifth game. No. 13 Penn State (18-4 overall, 7-3 Big Ten) won its seventh consecutive match 15-5, 10-15, 16-14, 7-15, 15-9. It was the Nittany Lions ninth consecutive win over Ohio State (17-2, 7-2). Penn State’s Katie Schumacher had a match-high 22 kills for the Nittany Lions with Mishka Levy adding 20 and Amanda Rome 12. OSU’s Shelly Draeger (So., Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) scored a team-high 18 kills with Suzie Stiling (So., Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) adding 17 and Dana Stearns (Sr., Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) and Anne Botica (Jr., Windsor, Ont./St. Joseph) Anne Botica (Jr., Windsor, Ont./St. Joseph) with 15 each.
Penn State opened game one with a 3-0 lead and never looked back as they won 15-5. The Nittany Lions hit .308 for the game to .024 for the Buckeyes. Levy had a game-high five kills with Cara Smith adding four for Penn State who outblocked OSU five to one.
Ohio State broke a two-all tie in game two to take an 8-2 lead. The Buckeyes were serving game point at 14-7, but a Schumacher kill sided out. Two OSU errors and a kill by Schumacher cut the OSU margin to 14-10. A Sue Calligaris (So., Palermo, Italy/Liceo Linguistico) kill returned the serve to OSU for its second game point attempt. Schumacher’s kill sided out but a kill by Draeger returned the serve to OSU for its third game point and a Penn State error closed the game at 15-10. For the game Ohio State hit .340 to .234 for Penn State. Draeger contributed seven kills along with five from Calligaris for the Buckeyes while Schumacher had seven for Penn State.
Game three saw the score tied six times. The Nittany Lions broke a six-six tied with four consecutive points off two kills by Levy and two OSU errors. Three Penn State errors cut the PSU lead to one at 10-9. A Leilani Schlottfeldt ace put the lead at 11-9 but a Penn State error made it one again at 11-10. Rome’s kill put PSU up 12-10 but a Nittany Lion error cut it to 12-11. A Levy kill made it 13-11 but a kill by Katie Virtue (So., St. Charles, Ill./St. Francis) made it 13-12. A PSU error tied the game at 13 and another error set game point for Ohio State at 14-13. OSU’s service error sided out to Penn State and a block by Levy tied the game at 14. A Levy kill gave Penn State a 15-14 lead and serving game point. A Nittany Lion error sided out to OSU but another Buckeye service error returned the serve to Penn State for its second game point. A Buckeye error closed out the game at 16-14. Penn State hit .167 for the game to .182 for Ohio State. Schumacher had a team-high eight kills in the game for Penn State with Draeger accounting for seven kills for Ohio State.
From a two-all tie in game four, Ohio State outscored Penn State eleven to two to take a 13-4 lead. At 13-5, a PSU error set game point at 14-5. An OSU error gave the ball to Penn State who cut the lead to 14-7. A Nittany Lion error returned the serve to OSU for its second game point and a kill by Calligaris ended the game at 15-7. Ohio State hit .345 for the game to .000 for Penn State
OSU held a 3-2 lead in game five before three OSU errors put Penn State ahead 5-3. A Stiling kill closed the lead to 5-4 but two kills by Smith with kills by Rome and Levy opened a 9-4 Penn State lead. A block by Levy and Smith and a kill by Levy put the Nittany Lions ahead 11-4. A Stiling kill made it 11-5 but an OSU error put the lead at 12-5. A Levy kill made it 13-5 but a kill by Botica and a Penn State error cut the PSU lead to 13-7. Levy’s 20th kill set match point at 14-7. A Botica kill and a PSU error cut the lead to 14-9 but a kill by Schumacher ended the game at 15-9. Penn State hit .500 for the game to .095 for Ohio State.
Penn State hit .206 for the match to .202 for Ohio State. Each squad had 75 kills. The Nittany Lions had a 17-12 advantage in blocking with Ohio State having the edge in digs, 82-68 and aces, 8-5.
Ohio State faces Indiana (12-7, 3-6) at 7 p.m. Saturday night in St. John Arena. The match will be delayed cablecast by ESPN2. It will be shown at 3:30 p.m. eastern on Sunday.
