COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 11th-ranked Ohio State women’s volleyball team rebounded from Friday’s 3-2 loss at Minnesota with a 3-0 (15-9, 16-14, 15-10) win at Iowa (8-8 overall, 4-4 Big Ten). The Buckeyes, now 17-1 overall and 7-1 in the Big Ten move back into a first place tie with Minnesota and Wisconsin. Anne Botica (Jr., Windsor, Ont./St. Joseph) had a match-high 20 kills for Ohio State with Suzie Stiling (So., Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) adding a career-high 17. Also in double-figure kills for the Buckeyes were Sue Calligaris (So., Palermo, Italy/Liceo Linguistico) and Shelly Draeger (So., Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) with 13 each. Iowa’s Katie Panhorst had a team-high 14 kills with Sara Meyermann adding 12 and Renee Hill 11.
Ohio State opened game one going ahead 4-0 on two Iowa errors, a kill by Stiling and an ace serve by Draeger. The Hawkeyes responded with two aces by Hill, a block by Brittany Naucke and Myermann and an OSU error to tie the score at four. The Buckeyes went ahead 5-4 on a Botica kill but a kill by Panhorst tied the game at five. Two Stiling kills, a solo block by Stiling and an error by Iowa put Ohio State ahead 9-5. An OSU error cut the lead to 9-6 but three Iowa errors gave the Buckeyes a 12-6 lead. OSU expanded the lead to 13-6 on a Draeger kill. Iowa cut the lead to 13-8 on a block by Jamie Lansing and Panhorst and an ace serve by Fabiana de Abreu. A Hawkeye error gave the Buckeyes game point at 14-8. A Meyermann kill sided out to Iowa and a block by de Abreu and Naucke cut the lead to five at 14-9. Calligaris sided out for OSU with a kill and a Hawkeye error ended the game at 15-9. Ohio State hit .256 for the game to .122 for Iowa. A Buckeye error gave Iowa a 1-0 lead in game two. Iowa returned the favor to tie the game at one. Kills by Panhorst and Lansing put Iowa up 3-1. Calligaris cut the Hawkeye lead to 3-2 but a Lansing kill made it 4-2. OSU took a 6-4 on four consecutive points consisting of two kills by Stiling and two blocks by Stiling and Katie Virtue (So., St. Charles, Ill./St. Francis). Iowa’s Naucke aced OSU to cut the lead to 6-5. A Calligaris kill made it 7-5 but an OSU error cut the lead to one at 7-6. Iowa tied the game at seven with a Naucke kill. A Calligaris ace, a Virtue kill and an Iowa error gave OSU a 10-7 lead. At 11-8, a block by Stiling and an Erin Treadway (Fr., Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) kill put OSU up 13-8. Iowa cut the lead to 13-10 with a kill by Meyermann and an OSU error. A Hawkeye error set game point for Ohio State at 14-10. An OSU error sided out to Iowa. The Hawkeyes responded with a Hill kill and solo block and an OSU error to close to 14-13. Panhorst tied the game at 14 with a kill. A kill by Dana Stearns (Sr., Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) gave the Buckeyes a 15-14 lead and serving its second game point. Iowa sided out with a Panhorst kill. A third OSU game point was stopped by a Buckeye service error. Calligaris sided out with a kill an on OSU’s fourth game point, a kill by Draeger ended the game at 16-14. The Buckeyes hit .240 for the game to .236 for the Hawkeyes.
Ohio State started game three with a 4-0 lead off kills by Draeger, Stiling and Botica and an Iowa error. An ace serve by Evelena Ornelas cut the lead to 4-1. Two kills by Draeger, kills by Calligaris and Stiling and an ace serve by Stearns gave OSU a 9-1 lead. Iowa responded with kills by Lansing and Panhorst, a block by Hill and an OSU error to cut the lead to 9-5. Botica’s kill put OSU up 10-5 but a kill by Meyermann made it 10-6. Iowa cut the lead to one (10-9) on an OSU error and blocks by Panhorst and Lansing and de Abreu and Naucke. A Hawkeye error put OSU ahead 11-9. Stiling and Draeger combined for a block to make the score 12-9. A Buckeye error cut the lead to 12-10. Stiling’s third solo block made it 13-10. Virtue set match point with an ace serve and an Iowa error ended the game at 15-10. Ohio State hit .231 for the game to .228 for Iowa.
For the match, Ohio State hit .240 to Iowa’s .202. OSU had a 72-60 advantage in kills and a 75-70 margin in digs. OSU’s Calligaris had a match-high 15 digs, tying her career high. The Hawkeyes outblocked Ohio State 11 to six and had a five to four edge in aces.
Saturday’s Iowa match will be replayed Sunday at 5 p.m. eastern on Fox Sports.
Ohio State will host defending NCAA National Champion (No. 12) Penn State (16-4, 5-3) Friday, Oct. 20 and Indiana (12-6, 3-5) Saturday, Oct. 21. The Indiana match will be replayed on ESPN2 at 3:30 p.m. eastern on Sunday, Oct. 22.
