COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2 Ohio State men’s gymnastics team, under head coach Miles Avery, had its final tune-up of the regular season with the Alumni Exhibition today in Larkins Hall.
The annual event, which pitted the current Buckeyes against the alumni, gave this season’s team a chance to perform in front of a crowd before the start of the regular season. All of the current team members competed in at least one event, giving each gymnast a chance to get rid of some nervousness before the real season begins.
“I was happy with our performance today,” Avery said. “Obviously we don’t expect to hit 100 percent of our routines right now, but I think we’re on the right track. We’re basically where we need to be with our routines at this point of the season.”
Alumni returning for the Buckeyes included current U.S. Senior National Team member Doug Stibel (1996-99), Ohio State assistant coach Peter Landry (1996-99), last year’s Big Ten floor exercise champion Tim Elsner (1996-99) and academic all-Big Ten honorees Michael Canales (1996-99), Neil Niemi (1994-97) and Jason Pelland (1996-97). Former Buckeye Michael Finn (1994-97) served as the judge for the event.
Stibel, a three-time All-American at OSU, closed the exhibition with his high bar routine that he won a gold medal with for the United States at an international competition in November.
The Buckeyes open the regular season at the Windy City Invitational Jan. 15 in Chicago, Ill. at 6 p.m.
