COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State men’s gymnastics coach Miles Avery announced today Daren Lynch (Jr., Londonderry, N.H.) and Jay Nardelli (Jr., Centreville, Va.) were voted team captains for the 2000 season by their teammates.
Lynch earned All-America honors last season after placing fifth on the vault at the NCAA Championships. He has been an academic All-American, an academic all-Big Ten selection and an OSU scholar-athlete honoree.
“Daren Lynch has been the ideal team player the last two seasons doing whatever it takes to make this team better,” Avery said. “His teammates have taken notice and bestowed him this honor. He has been quite a leader and has let his actions speak for themselves. His teammates also respect his commitment to being the best at everything he does in gymnastics, academics and life in general.”
Nardelli is an OSU scholar-athlete and has been an academic all-Big Ten honoree. He set career highs on the pommel horse, still rings and all-around last season at the NCAA East Regional.
“Jay Nardelli is one of the athletic leaders of this team,” Avery said. “He will be one of our top gymnasts this year and thus one of the top in the country. His teammates have seen how he has changed his attitude and work ethic for the better to help this team. This summer Jay put himself into a position to compete on the national level and proved he is one of the best gymnasts in America. His teammates saw this incredible change in him and thought him worthy of leading this team.”
The No. 2-ranked Buckeyes will host the Alumni Exhibition, Saturday, Jan. 8 at 2 p.m. in Larkins Hall, before opening the regular season at the Windy City Invitational, Jan. 15, in Chicago, Ill., at 6 p.m.
