Women’s Volleyball Loses 4-Game Decision To USPV Dream Team – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – In an exhibition match, the United States Professional Volleyball “Dream Team” defeated the Ohio State women’s squad in four games, 12-15, 15-8, 15-6, 15-8 Sunday in St. John Arena. Buckeye senior outside hitter Rosie Snow shared a match-high honors with USPV’s Anne Eastman with 25 kills each and Snow added a match high 12 digs. Freshman middle blocker Suzie Stiling had 17 kills for OSU with junior middle hitter Dana Stearns adding 11. Besides Eastman’s 25 kills the USPV had excellent scoring balance with 22 kills from Therese Crawford, 16 from Sarah Silvernail and 12 from Patrice Arrington. Both Arrington and Crawford recorded a team-high 11 digs.
The Buckeyes opened a 5-0 lead in game one and held an 8-4 lead before the USPV rallied with six straight points to go up 10-8. OSU tied the game at 10 on a kill by freshman middle blocker Sue Calligaris. A Snow kill put OSU up 11-10, but an OSU error tied the match at 11. Kills by Stiling and Stearns put the Buckeyes up at 13-11, but an OSU error cut that margin to 13-12. After several sideouts, a USPV error gave OSU point 14 and on game point, a kill by Snow finished the game at 15-12. The Buckeyes hit .340 in the game to .375 for the USPV.
The USPV opened with an 8-0 lead in game two off six kills and two ace serves. OSU close to within three points at 11-8 but would come no closer as three OSU errors and another ace serve ended the game at 15-8. In the game the USPV hit .356 to .171 for OSU.
After leading game three 2-0, the USPV extended the lead to 3-1, but OSU on kills by Stiling and freshman outside hitter Shelly Draeger tied the game at three. OSU fell behind 9-3 and never could catch up after that. The USPV went up 13-6 and went on to a 15-6 win. For the game the USPV hit .512 to OSU’s .255.
The Buckeyes fell behind 3-0 in game four but tied the match at six-all on a USPV error. On four kills and two OSU errors, the USPV pushed the lead to 12-6 and kept the margin to the end of the game at 15-9. In the fourth game, the USPV hit .385 to OSU’s .167. Match statistics showed the USPV hitting .406 for the match to OSU’s .238. Each squad had five ace serves with the USPV having the edge in digs, 55 to 54 and a commanding 18 to five advantage in blocks.
OSU (1-0 overall) returns to the regular season Tuesday night at Akron (7:30 p.m.) before going to California for matches with Loyola Marymount (Fri., Sept. 10) and Houston (Sat., Sept. 11). The USPV plays Monday at Wright State in Dayton.
