COLUMBUS, Ohio—Former Ohio State University gymnasts Blaine Wilson (Columbus, Ohio) and Doug Stibel (Canton, Mich.) will compete Wednesday and Friday at the 1999 World Team Trials in Kansas City, Mo. The 15 gymnasts in the event will be competing for six spots on the 1999 World Championship Team.
The 1999 World Championship team will represent the U.S. Oct. 8-16 at the World Championships in Tiajnin, China. The U.S. team has to finish 12th or better at that event to qualify for the 2000 Olympic Games in Australia.
Wilson, a member of the U.S. Olympic Team in 1996, won an unprecedented fourth-consecutive national title at the U.S. Championships this summer. He was a six-time NCAA individual event champion while competing for the Buckeyes from 1994-97. Wilson won the prestigious Nissen Award in 1997.
Stibel, who completed his eligibility at Ohio State last season, was the 1999 Big Ten horizontal bar champion. He earned all-American honors on the horizontal bar in 1998 and on parallel bars and floor exercise in 1999.
