Women’s Volleyball Defeats Houston In Four Games – Ohio State Buckeyes

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Ohio State (3-1) women’s volleyball team defeated Houston (3-3) 15-7, 6-15, 15-6, 15-12 at Loyola Marymount’s Gersten Pavilion Saturday. OSU’s Dana Stearns had a match-high 18 kills, while Jen Flynn added 15, Shelly Draeger 11 and Rosie Snow 10. The Cougars received a team-high 15 kills from Jennifer Wittenburg with Stephanie Heiskell adding 12 and 10 each from Jillian King and Michelle Frazier.
Ohio State won games one and three with 15-7 and 15-6 scores, respectively. Houston took game two with a 15-6 mark. The Buckeyes held on to capture game four with a 15-12 score despite only hitting .167 for the game.
Match statistics favored Houston in hitting percentage, .218 to .188, digs (50-46) and blocks (10-4). OSU outserved the Cougars nine to two and had a 68 to 58 edge in kills.
OSU Stearns hit .467 for the match and collected 10 digs. Freshman setter Katie Virtue had 54 assists and a career high 11 digs in the match, her second as the starting setter.
Outside hitter Jen Flynn was named to the All-Tournament team for the Buckeyes.
The Buckeyes next travel to Pittsburgh for a Wednesday match (7:30 p.m.) before hosting Boise State (7 p.m.) on Friday and Temple (3 p.m.) Saturday in St. John Arena
