Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Dayton In Season Opener – Ohio State Buckeyes

DAYTON, Ohio – Behind match-highs of 13 kills and nine digs by Rosie Snow the 17th ranked Ohio State (1-0) women’s volleyball team opened the 1999 season with a 15-9, 15-3, 15-4 win over the Dayton Flyers in the Frericks Center in front of 817 fans. OSU, who returned all six starters from last season, started a trio of freshmen along with Snow, Dana Stearns (nine kills) and Jen Flynn (40 assists and eight digs). The trio produced 23 kills, 12 digs and six blocks in the opener. Suzie Stiling tallied nine kills and three blocks with Sue Calligaris having seven kills and three blocks and Shelly Draeger contributing seven kills and six digs.%^$
The Flyers of Dayton (0-1) had Katie Ferriell and Sierra Ashley collect a team-high of nine kills with Karen Maciaga adding six. Ashley had a team-high seven digs with Maciaga adding five while setter Carla Muntz had 28 assists.%^$
The Buckeyes opened game one with a 4-0 lead and held the lead at 6-2, before Dayton outscored the Buckeyes six to two to tie the game at eight. The Buckeyes sided out and then scored three straight points on a block by Calligaris and Stiling and two ace serves by Snow. OSU extended the lead to 13-8 on a Dayton hitting error and a kill by Snow. After a Dayton kill by Ashley for their ninth point the Buckeyes came back with a kill by Calligaris to put OSU at game point at 14-9. After an exchange of side out, OSU’s blocking duo of Calligaris and Stiling scored game point off a Dayton attack attempt. For the game the Buckeyes hit .366 to the Flyers .256.%^$
Dayton took a 2-0 lead in game two before the Buckeyes scored the next nine points for a 9-2 lead. A Dayton kill by Ferriell cut the lead to 9-3 but OSU expanded the lead to 12-3 on two Dayton errors and a kill by Draeger. The Buckeyes closed the game with another three point run off kills by Flynn and Snow and a Dayton ball handling error for a 15-3 OSU win. OSU hit .455 for the game to .034 for Dayton.%^$
OSU opened a 2-0 lead in game three. Dayton made it 2-1 on an OSU hitting error but then scored the next 11 points to go up 13-1. An OSU hitting error cut the lead to 13-2 and an ace serve by Dayton’s Carla Muntz and a block by Ferriell and Megan Pease made it 13-4. OSU sided out and a Dayton attack error for point 14 and a match winning kill by Draeger closed the game at 15-4. Ohio State hit .483 for the game to .114 for the Flyers.%^$
For the match the Buckeyes hit .424 to .146 for Dayton. OSU held the edge in kills, 52-34, digs, 37-17 and ace serves, six to three. Each team recorded four blocks.%^$
Next for Ohio State is an exhibition home match Sunday, Sept. 5 (2 p.m.) against the “dream team” of the United State Professional Volleyball League that is touring the Midwest this season. The Buckeyes then return to the road to face Akron on Tuesday, Sept. 7 (7:30 p.m.).%^$
