COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State sophomore center Shamar Herron (6-9, 255, Detroit, Mich./Pershing) has decided to leave Ohio State to pursue his academic and playing career elsewhere. He has not decided where he will transfer at this time.
Herron played two seasons at Ohio State, playing in 38 games and starting three. He averaged 1.4 points and 1.5 rebounds in two seasons while averaging 9.2 minutes a contest.
He had a career high six points against Purdue (2/7/98) and a career best seven rebounds against Army (11/22/98).
Herron said the decision to leave was difficult to make.
“I just felt I was not going to get my maximum playing time here so I had to go elsewhere,” Herron said. “I love the program and the university, it just came down to making me happy.”
Herron plans to complete the OSU spring quarter before looking at his options.
“I am going to finish the quarter and after that see what develops,” Herron said.
Ohio State head coach Jim O’Brien said the program has suffered a loss.
“We are disappointed because Shamar played no small role in our success this season,” O’Brien said. “He is one of the nicest and most team-oriented players I have ever had the privilege to coach. Although Shamar does not have great statistics, there is no doubt he will be missed.”
