Women’s Lacrosse Team Returns Home This Weekend to Play Virginia Tech – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s lacrosse team returns home this weekend to play host to the Virginia Tech Hokies. The game against the Hokies will be played on the practice field on the west side of Fred Taylor Drive, across from the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.
BUCKEYES TAKE TWO ON THE ROAD
The Buckeyes defeated Notre Dame 15-12, handing the Irish their second consecutive loss at Krause Stadium. Erin Andersen and Megan Mirick each scored four goals to lead the Buckeyes over the Irish. Megan Barnett added to her save total by snagging 14 shots. Saturday the Buckeyes took on the UCONN Huskies in Notre Dame, Ind. The Buckeyes rolled past the Huskies, 20-6. This was the second time this season the Buckeyes have netted 20 goals (the other was against Mercyhurst Feb. 27). Andersen and Mirick added to their goal total by scoring four more goals against the Huskies. Half of the Buckeyes’ goals were assisted, a first in Ohio State women’s lacrosse history.

SCOUTING VIRGINIA TECH
The Hokies enter Saturday’s game undefeated, 4-0. Under the helm of second-year coach Brooke Martin the Hokies have produced a program-best 8-6 finish last year and are off to their best start ever. The Hokies are led by junior midfielder Dawn Will, who has scored 19 goals in four games. She is currently ranked first in the nation in goals per game. Courtney Hubbard is also a force on the attack. She has netted 13 goals in four games. Melissa Wagner leads the Hokies defense from the cage. Wagner has grabbed 54 saves and currently holds a .607 save percentage.
BUCKEYES VS. VIRGINIA TECH
The Buckeyes and Virginia Tech have played each year in Ohio State women’s lacrosse history. Virginia Tech leads the series 3-0. The Hokies have won the two games in Blacksburg, Va., and defeated the Buckeyes two seasons ago in Columbus.

BUCKEYE LEADERS
Ohio State has scored 95 goals in eight games, while their opponents have only scored 75 goals. The Buckeyes have been led by a powerful attack of underclassmen. Sophmore Erin Andersen has netted a team high 18 goals. Freshman Megan Mirick is a close second with 17 goals. Last year’s second highest scorer, sophomore Celeste Cianfrani has continued where she left off last season. Cianfrani has scored 17 goals. Freshmen Lauren Cochran and Kylee Reade have also reached goal totals reaching double figures, scoring 12 and 10 goals, respectively. While the attack has been sizzling the defense has also been strong. Megan Barnett leads the defense from the goal. Barnett has snagged 95 saves for a save percentage of .559.
HEAD COACH SUE STIMMEL
Sue Stimmel, a native of Boyertown, Pa., is entering her fourth season as head coach at Ohio State. She has compiled a 22-24 mark at OSU thus far, and is the only head coach in the brief history of the varsity women’s lacrosse program. Last season, against the toughest schedule ever assembled for an Ohio State women’s lacrosse team, the Buckeyes were extremely competitive in every game and lost four games by a total of nine goals. Stimmel came to Ohio State from Denison University where she guided the Big Red to a 76-24 record during her career. While at Denison, she was named NCAC Coach of the Year in 1990, 1992 and 1993. Denison won five NCAC championships and made five appearences in the NCAA Tournament during Stimmel’s tenure. Stimmel is a 1984 graduate of Temple University, where she received a degree in mathematics. She was afour-year varsity starter and a member of Temple’s national championship teams in 1982 and 1984. Stimmel is a member of the mid-Atlantic NCAA Regional Advisory Committee and the IWLCA Rules Committee.
