Men’s Gymnastics Finishes Third at Big Ten Championship – Ohio State Buckeyes

Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s gymnastics team placed third at the Big Ten Championship over the weekend. The Buckeyes’ 229.475 put them behind first-place Michigan (230.275) and second-place Iowa (229.475), the host of the Championship. Michigan claimed its first title since 1975 and head coach Kurt Golder was named Coach of the Year while Scott Vetere was named Freshman of the Year. Iowa’s Todd Strada claimed the Gymnast of the Year.
For the Buckeyes (18-4/13-4), Doug Stibel (Sr., Canton, Mich) finished fourth in the all-around and came back the following day to be crowned Big Ten Champion on the Horizontal Bar. Jamie Natalie (So, Hockessin, Del.) finished fifth in the all-around and second for the floor exercise. Tim Elsner (Sr., Middletown, N.J.), ranked number one in the nation on floor exercise, won the Big Ten Championship on floor exercise. Stibel, Elsner and Natalie were named to the 1999 All-Big Ten Team.
Ohio State has two weeks to prepare for the NCAA Eastern Regional on April 10 hosted by Illinois. Last year, the Buckeyes won the competition, an event which will draw the best teams in the east to Champaign, Ill. Only the top three teams will advance to the NCAA Championship on April 22-24 in Lincoln, Neb.
