LOS ANGELES, Calif. – UCLA (27-3), with a 3-0 (15-10, 15-12, 15-10) win over Ohio State (17-12) advanced to the NCAA Central Regional at Penn State next week. The Bruins, behind a match-high 19 kills by Kristee Porter, held Ohio State to a .157 hitting percentage while hitting .255. Joining Porter in double-figure kills for UCLA were Lauren Fendrick with 17 and Elisabeth Bachman with 12. OSU’s Jen Flynn had a team-high 17 kills for the Buckeyes with Rosie Snow and Dana Stearns adding 12 each.
UCLA opened a 6-0 lead in game one thanks to three OSU errors, two kills by Kristee Porter and another by Tamika Johnson. The Buckeyes cut the lead to 6-2 on a block by Dana Stearns and Shelly Draeger and a Stearns kill. Lauren Fendrick’s kill put UCLA up 7-2 and with an Ashley Bowles service ace and two OSU errors took a 10-2 lead. OSU’s Stearns and Jen Flynn combined for a block and with a Draeger ace serve, a kill by Flynn and an UCLA error cut the lead to four for the Bruins at 10-6. The Buckeyes cut deeper into the Bruin lead with a kill by Rosie Snow and one by Suzie Stiling (10-8). A UCLA error and a Stearns kills tied the game at 10. UCLA regained the lead with a Fendrick kill and with three OSU errors reached game point at 14-10. A Stearns kill stopped game point one and a Bruin error stopped game point two before an OSU ball handling error ended the game at 15-10. For the game UCLA hit .314 to OSU’s .174.
Ohio State had a 4-0 lead in game two from a Jen Flynn kill and three Bruin errors. Three Buckeye errors cut that lead to one at 4-3. An OSU block by Dana Stearns and Shelly Draeger made the OSU led two at 5-3 and a UCLA error made it 6-3. Three consecutive OSU errors tied the game at six and a kill by Kristee Porter put UCLA ahead at 7-6. The lead went to 8-6 on an OSU error and reached 11-6 on three kills by Lauren Fendrick. Fendrick’s ace serve made it 12-6, but a Bruin service error sided the ball to OSU stopping the run. OSU’s Suzie Stiling connected for a kill and Jen Flynn added two more to cut the UCLA lead to 12-9. A block by Stearns and Katie Virtue cut the lead to two at 12-10. Tamika Johnson sided out for the Bruins and two OSU errors put UCLA at game point at 14-10, serving for the game. A kill by Stearns sided out for OSU and a UCLA error cut the lead to 14-11. An OSU error returned the serve to UCLA for its second game point. That serve resulted in a side out kill by Rosie Snow and another kill by Snow cut the lead back to two at 14-12. Porter sided out for the Bruins and a Porter kill ended the game at 15-12. The Bruins hit .232 in the game to .140 for Ohio State.
A Rosie Snow kill gave OSU a 1-0 lead in game three and with a UCLA error put the Buckeyes up 2-0. The Bruins responded with five consecutive points off two OSU errors, kills by Ashley Bowles and Kristee Porter and a block by Bowles and Elisabeth Bachman. A UCLA error cut the lead to 5-3 and a block by Shelly Draeger and Sue Calligaris made the lead 5-4. A Bachman kill put the Bruins up 6-4. The lead was cut to one on a Bruin error, but went back to two (7-5) on a Lauren Fendrick kill. Two Bruin errors tied the game at seven, but two OSU errors returned the led to two for UCLA at 9-7. OSU tied the game at nine with a Rosie Snow kill and a block by Sue Calligaris and Katie Virtue. UCLA regained the lead at 10-9 on a OSU error. A Porter kill made it 11-9 and with an OSU ball handling error put the Bruins ahead 12-9. A Buckeye error made the lead 13-9 but an Anne Botica kill cut the lead to 13-10. An Erika Selsor ace serve set match point at 14-10 and Angela Eckmier’s solo block ended the game and match at 15-10. UCLA hit .220 for the game to OSU’s .160.
In the match the Bruins hit .255 to .157 for the Buckeyes. OSU had the advantage in blocks, eight to four while UCLA outdug Ohio State 66 to 57 and had a four to one edge in ace serves.
