COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State (12-9 overall, 6-8 Big Ten, tied for 6th in the Big Ten) hosts the Michigan schools this weekend. OSU plays Michigan State (18-8, 8-6, 5th) Friday at 7 p.m. and faces Michigan (12-11, 4-10,9th) Sunday at 2 p.m. Friday’s match with MSU will be replayed on Insight Communications and Time Warner Nov. 13 and 14 at 7 p.m. Sunday’s match with Michigan will be carried by Fox Sports Channel-Chicago Sunday at 5 p.m. Eastern.
The Buckeyes split road matches last week. OSU defeated Illinois 15-8, 15-13, 15-9 and lost to Indiana 5-15, 10-15, 10-15.
FAMILY FOUR PACK NIGHT FOR MICHIGAN STATE
Friday’s Michigan State match is Family Four Pack Night. Four tickets, four hot dogs, four Cokes and a box of popcorn can be purchased for $16.
MSU MATCH ON DELAYED CABLECAST
Central Ohio SPORT! Television will delay cablecast the Michigan State match locally on Insight Communications Ch. 36 and Time Warner Ch. 24. The match will be carried Saturday, Nov. 13 and Sunday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. Randy Rhinehart will call the action with former Ohio State All-American Audrey (DiPronio) Flaugh providing the color.
UM MATCH ON FOX SPORTS CHICAGO
Fox Sports Chicago will delay cablecast the Ohio State-Michigan match. The match will be carried Sunday, Nov. 14 at 5 p.m. Eastern. Dave Loane will call the action with Angie Kammer providing the color.
LOOKING AT THE BUCKEYES
Ohio State, offensively, is led by Rosie Snow who averages 3.99 kills (299) per game. Jen Flynn ranks second with a 3.06 average on 236 kills. Sue Calligaris is the team’s top percentage hitter at .322. On the serve, Flynn has a team-high 24 aces with Snow at 20 aces. Setter Katie Virtue is averaging 12.92 assists per game on 930 assists. Defensively, Snow has a team-high 197 digs (2.63) with Flynn second with a 2.55 average (196). Suzie Stiling (9-54, .85) has a team-high 63 blocks and Calligaris is second (2-44, .82) with 46 total blocks. As a team Ohio State is hitting .240 and averaging 16.68 kills per game. OSU averages 2.08 blocks, 13.38 digs and 1.47 aces per game. Buckeye opponents are hitting .213 and average 14.14 kills per game. Opponents average 2.60 blocks, 11.82 digs and 1.01 aces per game.
OSU GETS 3RD BIG TEN ROAD WIN
In a solid team effort, Ohio State defeated Illinois in Champaign to pick up its third Big Ten road win of the season. The Buckeyes also have wins against Northwestern and No. 23 Wisconsin on the road. OSU has four home matches (Michigan State, Michigan, Purdue and Wisconsin) and two road matches (Minnesota and Iowa) left in the season.
WISSLER RETURNS AS UM COACH
Ohio State All-American Leisa Wissler (1988-91) returns to St. John Arena for Sunday’s match with Michigan. Now Leisa Rosen, she is an assistant coach for the Michigan Wolverines to her husband/head coach Mark Rosen. Leisa was an All-American for Ohio State in 1991 and was named the Big Ten Player of the Year and the Ohio State Female Athlete of the Year that season.
DRAEGER HITS CAREER HIGH .500
Against Indiana, Shelly Draeger hit a career-high .500 with 10 kills, two errors on 16 attempts. Her previous best was .478 against Indiana (13-2-23).
STEARNS A STARTER AGAIN
After not starting in five of the last six matches, Dana Stearns started against Illinois and Indiana last weekend and produced. She had 12 kills, hit .375, two aces and six blocks at Illinois and picked up six kills and hit .308 at Indiana.
STILING HAS SOLID WEEKEND
With a combined 23 kills, 17 digs and seven blocks, Suzie Stiling produced a solid performance last weekend. Stiling had 12 kills, an ace serve, eight digs and five assist blocks against Illinois coming back the next night at Indiana with 11 kills, nine digs and two blocks. On the season, she is averaging 2.51 kills per game and a team-high 63 total blocks for an .85 per game average.
SENIORS PROVIDE OFFENSE
Seniors Jen Flynn and Rosie Snow are leaders by example to a young Buckeye squad. Flynn and Snow have combined for 535 kills which represents 41 percent of OSU’s offense. The also have produced 44 aces (38%), 393 digs (38%) and 62 blocks (21%).
FLYNN 16TH IN CAREER KILLS
Jen Flynn’s 32 kills last weekend gives her 836 for her career and moves her to 16th on the Ohio State career kills list. She passed Erika Schlitz (1988-91) who has 816. She also has moved to 16th in career attempts with 2,090.
FLYNN 8TH IN CAREER DIGS
Jen Flynn’s 26 digs on the weekend (16 vs. Illinois and 10 vs. Indiana) gives her 1,074 for her career. She moves to eighth on the Ohio State career digs list passing Gabriele Jobst (1992-94) who has 1,052. She now needs four digs to pass No. 7 Carrie Leonard (1991-94) who has 1,077.
FLYNN 10TH IN TOTAL BLOCKS
With two solo and three assist blocks at Illinois, Jen Flynn increased her career total blocks to 252 and moved into 10th place on the Ohio State career total blocks list passing Sara Daniel (1991-94) who has 250. Flynn needs two assist blocks (she has 221) to move into ninth place on the OSU career assist blocks list. She would pass Kristi Neuman (1983-86) who has 222.
SNOW 13TH IN ACE SERVES
Rosie Snow served two key aces at Illinois and now has 102 in her career. Those ace serves moved her to 13th on the Ohio State career ace list passing Margie Meyers (1984-87) who has 101.
STEARNS 6TH IN CAREER ASSIST BLOCKS
Dana Stearns collected six blocks (one solo and five assists) at Illinois and added an assist block against Indiana to raise her career total to 250. She moves to sixth on the Ohio State career assist blocks list passing Sherri Rinker (1984-87) who has 246.
VIRTUE 6TH IN CAREER ASSISTS
With 53 assists at Illinois and 45 against Indiana, Katie Virtue has 930 in her career. She has moved to sixth on the Ohio State career assist list passing Danielle Berlien (1987) who has 927.
OSU 1-4 AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS
The upset win at Wisconsin marked OSU’s first win this season over a nationally-ranked squad. The Badgers were ranked 24th and OSU was unranked. Ohio State is now 1-4 against ranked opponents, losing to No. 20 @Michigan (2-3), to No. 1 @Penn State (0-3), to No. 23 Minnesota (2-3) and No. 1 Penn State (1-3).

HEAD COACH JIM STONE
Jim Stone is in his 18th year at Ohio State. He has a 393-178 (.688) record with the Buckeyes and is 224-97 (.698) in Big Ten play. His squads have won Big Ten championships in 1989, 1991 and 1994 and in the last 10 years has only finished below third once. In the championship years, he was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year and in 1991 was the Volleyball Monthly Coach of the Year. For the last 10 years, OSU has participated in the NCAA Championships, advancing to the national semifinals in 1991 and 1994. Stone’s coaching career record includes three years at Wyoming (1979-1981). His 21-year career record is 443-220 (.668).
THE DEAN OF THE BIG TEN COACHES
Head coach Jim Stone begins his 18th-year in the Big Ten at Ohio State. Closest to Stone is Mike Hebert of Minnesota who is entering his 17th season. He spent 14 years at Illinois and the last three at Minnesota.
TELEVISION COVERAGE
The Buckeyes are scheduled for eight televised matches this season. OSU’s Nov. 5 match at Illinois will be carried by ESPN2. Broadcast of the match will be Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. Eastern. Ohio State also will take part in the Fox Sports Chicago Big Ten package. OSU’s match against Michigan Nov. 14 will be broadcast at 5 p.m. Eastern that day.
Ohio State also will have six matches produced by Central Ohio SPORT! Television. The following matches will be broadcasted by tape delay: Temple match Sept. 21 and 22, Illinois Oct. 5 and 6, Iowa Oct. 24 and 26, Penn State Oct. 28 and 29, Michigan State Nov. 13 and 14, Wisconsin Nov. 28 and 29. The matches will be replayed at 7 p.m. on Insight Communications (Ch. 36) and Time Warner (Ch. 24).
NEW LOOK FLOOR AT ST. JOHN ARENA
After 42 years of having a basketball floor painted on the floor of St. John Arena, a new look greets the 1999 season of volleyball. Earlier this year, the floor of St. John Arena was sanded down to removed the basketball court markings. In its place is a painted volleyball court for use by the women’s and men’s teams.
BUCKEYES MAKE THE GRADE
Ohio State had four student-athletes honored by the Big Ten for their academic standing. Angelee Abbring, Jen Flynn, Laura Stalling and Dana Stearns were honored as Academic All-Big Ten selections. In addition, six players were honored as Ohio State Scholar-Athlete Award Winners. Included with the four players listed above were freshmen Erin Baker and Carey Cavanaugh.
NATIONAL TEAM CONNECTION
Former Buckeye Laura Davis (1991-94) continues in volleyball as a member of the United States National team. She plays the libero position, a back-row only player. Davis, a two-time All-American, was the 1994 National Player of the Year. Jenny Jackson (1992-95), a member of the national team for the past several years left the team earlier this year to pursue a career in engineering. Jackson was a 1994 All-American and a three-time All-Big Ten selection.
IN THE PROFESSIONAL RANKS
Two former OSU players, Tricia Stragliotto (1993-95) and Vanessa Wouters (1996-97) are currently playing professionally in Europe. Stragliotto, a 1995 All-American and a three-time All-Big Ten pick is playing in Italy while Wouters, a 1995 All-American and the Big Ten Player of the Year is playing in Germany.
HOLLY O’LEARY ENTERS HALL OF FAME
Former Buckeye Holly O’Leary (1987-90) of Cincinnati, Ohio was inducted into the Ohio State Sports Hall of Fame on Sept. 10. A two-time all-American, O’Leary was the 1989 Big Ten Player of the Year and helped OSU win the 1989 Big Ten Championship. She will join former players Mary Ormsby (1977-80), Lisa Bettio (1982-85) and Karen Alsbrooks (1976-79) in the Hall of Fame.
NCAA HISTORY
Ohio State has appeared in 10-consecutive NCAA Championships. The Buckeyes have advanced to the regional level seven times and twice (1991 and 1994) has reached the national semifinals. Overall the Buckeyes have a 13-10 (.565) record in NCAA play. OSU’s trips to the national semifinals included regional championship wins over Nebraska and Long Beach State on their courts.
