Women’s Volleyball Opens Michigan Week With A Victory – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State (14-9 overall, 8-8 Big Ten) women’s volleyball, with a 3-0 (15-6, 15-6, 15-8) win Sunday over Michigan (12-13, 4-12), completed its first Big Ten weekend sweep of the season that included a 3-2 (17-15, 13-15, 15-7, 4-15, 14-11) victory over Michigan State last Friday. Today’s match was broadcast by Fox Sports Chicago on a delayed basis Sunday afternoon. Buckeyes’ Jen Flynn (12 kills) and Shelly Draeger (11 kills) led the Ohio State offense while Dana Stearns added seven kills and Rosie Snow six. Michigan’s Sarah Behnke had a team-high nine kills for the Wolverines with Alija Pittenger contributing seven.
%^$The Buckeyes opened a 6-1 lead in game one off kills by Shelly Draeger and Jen Flynn with four Michigan errors. A Buckeye error made it 6-2 before kills by Draeger and Rosie Snow put the lead at 9-2. The OSU lead was cut to 9-4 off two OSU errors, but a UM error and a kill by Suzie Stiling made it 11-4. Katrina Lehman cut the lead to 11-5 with a kill but back-to-back kills by OSU’s Jen Flynn put the score at 13-5. An OSU error made it 13-6, but two Wolverine errors ended the game at 15-6. Ohio State hit .231 for the game to .025 for Michigan. Snow, Stearns and Flynn had five kills each in the game for the Buckeyes while Sarah Behnke totaled five for Michigan.
%^$Game two started with two Michigan errors for a 2-0 OSU lead. The Buckeyes returned the favor and the game was tied at two. An ace serve by Shelly Draeger and three UM errors put Ohio State ahead 6-2. Michigan closed to 6-3 on an OSU error but a UM hitting error made it 7-3. The Buckeyes scored the next seven points to take a 14-3 lead. Kills by Suzie Stiling and Jen Flynn and an ace serve by Anne Botica along with a Wolverine error made it 11-3 before Michigan called a time out. Flynn and Styling added kills along with a UM error to reach the 14-3 game point. Michigan responded with an ace serve by Nicole Kacor, a kill by Shannon Melka, and an OSU hitting error to cut the lead to 14-6. Setter Katie Virtue scored a kill to gain the side out for the Buckeyes and a solo block by Virtue was the game point at 15-6. Ohio State hit .423 for the game to .024 for Michigan. Stiling had four kills in the game with Flynn adding three. Michigan’s Sarah Behnke had four for the Wolverines with Melka adding three.
%^$A Dana Chapman kills and an OSU error gave Michigan a 2-0 lead in game three. OSU’s Shelly Draeger cut the lead to 2-1 with a kill but UM’s Katrina Lehman responded with a kill to make the score 3-1. An OSU error put Michigan’s lead at 4-1. Two OSU kills by Jen Flynn and Sue Calligaris with a UM error tied the game at four. The Wolverines took a 5-4 lead with a Joanna Fielder kill but a Wolverine error tied the game at five and another error put Ohio State ahead 6-5. A kill OSU’s Calligaris, two by Flynn and two Michigan errors gave the Buckeyes an 11-5 lead. Michigan cut the lead to three (11-8) with a kill by Alija Pittenger, an ace serve by Katrina Lehman and an OSU error. OSU’s Ann Botica scored two kills and Calligaris added another to give Ohio State match point at 14-8. A Wolverine error finished the game at 15-8 giving OSU a 3-0 win. For the game Ohio State hit .455 to .237 for Michigan. Draeger was impressive scoring seven kills in the game with Botica adding five and Calligaris four off the bench.
%^$For the match, Ohio State hit .357 to Michigan’s .092. OSU had a 51-35 advantage in kills. The Buckeyes outblocked Michigan nine to five with Suzie Stiling collecting a match-high seven blocks (one solo, six assists). Ohio State had a 49-26 advantage in digs with Anne Botica collected a match-high 11 and Rosie Snow 10 for the Buckeyes. Each squad had two aces. OSU’s Katie Virtue had 42 assists with six digs and two blocks in the match.%^$
