Volleyball Tops No. 18 UCLA in Five Games – Ohio State Buckeyes

HONOLULU, Hawaii – The 13th-ranked Ohio State (3-1) women’s volleyball team, down 2-1 in games to No. 18 UCLA (0-3), rallied to defeat the Bruins 1-15, 15-3, 11-15, 15-8, 15-11 for OSU’s first win in seven tries over UCLA.
Buckeye Rosie Snow recorded a career high 27 kills in the match and setter Carey Cavanaugh had a career high of 44 assists as she moved to run the offense to allow Jen Flynn to post a 14 kill, 16 dig match.
Each team dominated a game early, with UCLA winning game one, 15-1, and the Buckeyes taking game two, 15-3.
In game three, OSU had an 11-8 lead before the Bruins scored seven straight points to win the game, 15-11 and take a 2-1 lead in the match. Game four saw OSU go up 5-2 only to have UCLA take a 6-5 lead. The Buckeyes responded with the next six points to go up 11-6. UCLA closed to 12-8, but a kill by Jen Flynn, an ace by Brianne Spiers and the final kill by Dana Stearns ended the game, 15-8, in favor of OSU sending the match to the rallying scoring fifth game.
In the fifth game, the Bruins took an early 3-2 lead on an OSU hitting error. The Buckeyes scored four consecutive points, three on Bruin errors, to lead 6-3. OSU held a 9-5 lead, but four consecutive OSU errors gave the Bruins a 9-9 tie. UCLA’s hitting error put the Buckeyes up 10-9 and a kill by Rosie Snow encreased the lead to 11-9. Bruin Ashley Bowles made it 11-10 with a kill, but OSU scored consecutive points on kills by Stearns and Snow and a block by Spiers and Cavanaugh. UCLA’s Bowles broke the string with a kill for point (14-11), but Snow’s career-high 27th point of the match proved to the the winner for the Buckeyes.
OSU hit .213 to .254 for UCLA. Each team had seven total blocks with the Bruins having a 49-43 edge in digs to OSU’s nine-five advantage in ace serves.
The Buckeyes finish in the tournament will be determined by the outcome of the Florida-Hawaii match later today.
Ohio State returns home to host the Buckeye Invitational this weekend. Oregon State plays Nebraska and OSU hosts Xavier on Friday. Third place and championship matches are Saturday. Game times are 5 & 7 p.m.
