Women’s Volleyball Upsets No. 6 Florida – Ohio State Buckeyes

HONOLULU, Hawaii – Behind two games to none, the 13th ranked Ohio State (2-0) women’s volleyball team rallied to win a 3-2 decision over sixth-ranked Florida (0-1) in the opening match of the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Classic. The 9-15, 11-15, 15-4, 15-5, 20-18 win over the Gators evened the series with the Buckeyes at one win each.
%^$With Buckeyes Rosie Snow (26), Brianne Spiers (15) and Angelee Abbring (15) scoring career high kills in the match Ohio State stormed back in the third game of the match, hitting .567 to win by a convincing 15-4 score. OSU again came out strong in game four, hitting .500, producing a 15-5 win.
%^$The rally scoring fifth game was close in the beginning but Florida opened up a 12-9 lead on three blocks and a kill. With Florida up 13-10, two consecutive kills by OSU’s Snow close the gap to 13-12. A Gator kill by Jeni Jones put UF up 14-12 and serving for the match. A Spiers kill closed the margin to 14-13 and an ace serve by Snow tied the match at 14. Jennifer Sanchez scored on a solo block to put Florida up 15-14, and serving match point No. 2. OSU’s Abbring connected for a kill to tie the match at 15. Heather Wright put Florida up 16-15 with a kill and now serving match point No. 3. Abbring again denied the Gators with a kill, tying the match at 16. Gator Jenny Manz countered with a kill to give Florida a 17-16 lead and serving match point No. 4. Florida’s Kris Bova served the ball out for a Buckeye point, tying the game at 17. OSU’s Snow put the Buckeyes up 18-17 with a kill and OSU was now serving for the match. Jeni Jones tied the match at 18 for Florida with a kill. The Florida serve by Jennifer Schez sailed out of bounds, the Gator’s fourth service error for point of the game, putting the Buckeyes up 19-18 and serving their second match point. Snow’s career-high 26th kill of the night proved to be the winner giving OSU a 20-18 win in game five.
%^$For the match, OSU hit .282 as a team to .272 for Florida. The Buckeyes outdug the Gators, 60-47, but were outblocked 16 to six.
%^$Ohio State head coach Jim Stone on the match: “I thought we should have won game two (a 15-11 loss). Both the first two games the scores were fairly close the first half or two-thirds of those games. The last three games I thought the team did a much better job of not so much winning the point, we just didn’t lose points. Florida had to earn its points. We eliminated a lot of our self-imposed errors.”
%^$On the fifth game: ” I was glad we got that far. The one thing I thought our team did well coming down the stretch was that we served tough and aggressively. All of our hitter took swings at the ball. They were not tipping and rolling shots. They played to win and that was good to see.”
%^$On beating the 6th ranked team: “It was a real confidence boost. I don’t think when we came in here we knew where we were. The first two games, our play reflected that. The last three games maybe we learned something. They figured they could compete with a very good Florida team and I thought they did a good job.”
%^$On Rosie Snow: “She is a great athlete. She can be as good as anybody. I thing what her challenge is this year is to be good every night. I think she is up to that this year.”
%^$OSU’s Rosie Snow on the match: “I think it was great. It was real exciting to play in and I thought everybody gave their all for every point.”
%^$On her career-high 26 kills: “I was really playing for the team, trying to put every ball away.”
%^$Florida head coach Mary Wise: “In volleyball when you miss serves and don’t pass well, that can be the difference in the match. Credit Ohio State with how well they served and certainly the play of their outside hitter (Rosie) Snow. We certainly didn’t have an answer for that. But the fundamental problem with our team was that we looked like an early season serving and passing team. In other areas we were good and we will be better from this. I think we lost the match 20-18 (fifth game score), but I think the match was lost in game three. To be up 2-0 (in games) was foreign ground to us. I thought we were lucky to win game two. We went into the locker room thinking that we were very fortunate to be up two games to zero. In the beginning of game one when we were in it and missing serves and not playing very well, I thought we were so fortunate. Ohio State look so much more organized than us. I did’nt think we had an answer for (Rosie) Snow. And that played out. I thought that if we could block balls, we might have a chance. I think 16 blocks allowed us to have a chance. We eliminated any opportunity with missing 20 serves.” %^$
