Women’s Volleyball Drops 3-1 Decision to Minnesota – Ohio State Buckeyes

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Despite a combined 47 kills from OSU’s (7-4 overall, 0-2 Big Ten) Rosie Snow (24) and Angelee Abbring (23, her career high), 14th-ranked Ohio State lost to 24th-ranked Minnesota (11-2, 1-1) in four games. The 15-3, 11-15, 15-11, 15-11 loss extended OSU’s losing streak to two. The Gophers had three players in double figure kills with Nicole Branagh scoring a team high 22, Stephanie Hagen, 14 and Sonja Posthuma 11.
The Buckeyes produced a season high 15 aces, including eight in game two. Erin Baker collected a career-high four ace serves, while Jen Flynn and Nikki Cisco (career high) had three each with Rosie Snow and Dana Stearns adding two apiece.
Minnesota scored the first eight points of game one on two ace serves by Sonja Posthuma and kills by Erica Blaser, Posthuma and two by Yvonne Wicher. An ace by Nikki Cisco put the Buckeyes on the board and kills by Rosie Snow and Angelee Abbring proved to be the only points for OSU. Abbring’s kills made the score 10-3, but Minnesota closed out the game off five Buckeye errors for points to win 15-3. Minnesota hit .526 for the game with only two hitting errors while OSU hit .143 and had six attack errors.
Ohio State went up 5-0 to open game two. Two aces by Jen Flynn, a block by Flynn and Abbring, an ace by Cisco and a Gopher attack error accounted for the lead. Minnesota closed to 5-3 and stayed close at 8-5 before the Buckeyes put together four consecutive points off two kills by Flynn and two ace serves by Flynn. The Gophers scored the next five points to close to 12-10. Four contacts on Minnesota put the OSU lead at 13-10. After eight sideouts, another ace by Baker set game point at 14-10. Minnesota sided out twice before an overpass kill by Stearns gave OSU the game at 15-11. Ohio State scored eight aces in the game while having seven service errors. The Buckeyes hit .308 to .316 for the Gophers.
Minnesota opened up a 10-0 lead in game three. Ohio State, down 11-1, scored the next six points to close to 12-7. A Gopher ace by Branagh, a kill by Wichert and another ace by Posthuma put the Gophers at game point (14-8). OSU sided out five times while Laura Stalling scored an ace, Snow a solo block and Flynn another ace to close to 14-11. The Gophers, on their sixth game point, scored on a solo block by Stephanie Hagen for a 15-11 win. Minnesota hit .298 to .286 for Ohio State. Game four saw the Gophers take a 6-0 lead before a kill by Stalling put the Buckeyes on the board. Minnesota pushed the lead to 9-1 before a solo block by Snow, a kill by Abbring and an Baker ace cut the margin to 9-4. Minnesota held an 11-5 lead only to see the Buckeyes tie the game at 11 with the help of two Minnesota errors for points with a pair of kills by Abbring, a kill by Snow and Bakers’ career-high fourth ace of the match. The Gophers ended the run with a side out kill by Branagh. Three OSU hitting errors and an ace by Branagh finished the game at 15-11 giving the Gophers a 3-1 win. The Gophers hit .213 in the game to .104 for Ohio State.
For the match, Minnesota hit .301 to .224 for Ohio State. The Gophers outdug OSU, 52-48 and outblocked the Buckeyes, 10-9. OSU held the edge in aces, 15-12.
The Buckeyes continue to play on the road next week when they face Purdue on Oct. 2 and Illinois, Oct. 3.
