Volleyball Begins Big Ten Play Wednesday – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State, ranked 14th in the USA TODAY/AVCA Coaches Poll, opens Big Ten play at No. 1 Penn State (10-0) Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.. The Buckeyes then travel to No. 24 Minnesota (10-1) to face the Gophers on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Minnesota match will be broadcast live on Midwest Sports Channel with Ryan LeFebvre and Sarah Pearman calling the action.

OHIO STATE LAST WEEK
%^$The Buckeyes won three matches at home last week. OSU defeated Marshall 3-0 (15-1, 15-3, 15-1) on Tuesday, Pittsburgh 3-0 (15-7, 15-7, 15-8) on Wednesday and Cleveland State 3-0 (15-6, 15-7, 16-14) Sunday.

%^$Ohio State is on a three-match winning streak. The Buckeyes are receiving outstanding play from Rosie Snow who is averaging 4.20 kills per game. Dana Stearns has a team high hitting percentage of .379 and averages 3.83 kpg. She has a team high 23 total blocks (.77 per game). Stearns and setter/hitter Jen Flynn have 13 aces each. Flynn has a team high 70 digs for a 2.26 per game average. She also is fourth in kills with 64 (2.06 per game). Angelee Abbring is second in kills with 88 for a 2.84 per game average. Carey Cavanaugh has 176 assists for a 6.07 per game average. She has 35 digs and 10 total blocks including three solos. Flynn has 208 assists for a 6.71 per game average.

%^$Penn State leads the series 9-15. The Nittany Lions have won the last four meetings. OSU had victories in the six prior matches. From 1990 to present, Ohio State has won nine of 17 matches. At Penn State, the Nittany Lions have won six of nine matches. The Buckeyes won in State College in 1991, 1994 and 1995. The Buckeyes are one of three opponents to have defeated Penn State nine times. They include Nebraska (9-3) and Rutgers (9-20). Only Pittsburgh (16-27) with 16 wins has more.

%^$Ohio State has a 23-16 margin in the series with the Gophers. The Buckeyes won the last meeting in 1997, but lost the three previous matches. In Minneapolis, OSU has won nine of 16 meetings.

HEAD COACH JIM STONE
%^$Jim Stone is in his 17th year at Ohio State. He has a 371-157 (.703) record with the Buckeyes and is 210-78 (.728) in Big Ten play. His squads have won Big Ten championships in 1989, 1991 and 1994 and in the last nine years have never finished below third. In the championship years, he was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year and in 1991 was the Volleyball Monthly Coach of the Year. For the last nine years, OSU has participated in the NCAA Championships, advancing to the national semifinals in 1991 and 1994. Stone’s coach career record includes three years at Wyoming (1979-1981). His 19-year career record is 421-199 (.679).

REGIONAL AND LOCAL TV MATCHES SET
%^$The Buckeyes will have six matches broadcast locally, two regionally and one nationally during the season. Columbus Sports Network will broadcast two matches a month on tape delay with broadcast times to be determined. These matches include Marshall (Sept. 15, replayed Sept. 16, 7 p.m.), Pittsburgh (Sept. 16, replayed Sept. 17 & 18, 7 p.m.), Iowa (Oct. 10, replayed Oct. 11 & 13, 7 p.m.), Michigan (Oct. 17, replayed Oct. 18 & 20, 7 p.m.), Penn State (Nov. 11, replayed Nov. 12 & 13, 7 p.m.) and Indiana (Nov. 27, replayed Nov. 30 & Dec. 1, 7 p.m.). Fox Sports Chicago will broadcast OSU’s matches at Northwestern (Oct. 23) and vs. Purdue (Oct. 31) on tape delay the following Sunday at 5 p.m. Eastern. ESPN2 will carry the Ohio State at Michigan State match, moved to Sunday, Nov. 22, live that afternoon. Broadcast time is scheduled at 1 or 1:30 p.m.
