Volleyball Sweeps Cleveland State – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Behind a match-high 17 kills by Rosie Snow, 14th ranked Ohio State (7-2) defeated Cleveland State 15-6, 15-7, 16-14 before 682 fans Sunday afternoon. The match completes Ohio State’s non-conference season as they begin Big Ten play Wednesday in Rec Hall at top-ranked Penn State (10-0). They continue on the road with a Saturday match at Minnesota.
%^$Against Cleveland State, Angelee Abbring added 12 kills with Dana Stearns scoring seven kills and five blocks (one solo and four assists) and served four aces. Jen Flynn and Carey Cavanaugh each had 20 assists for the Buckeyes. The Vikings received nine kills from Alisha Bable and six by Michele Smith. Erinn Kingman had 19 assists with Stacie Cunningham adding eight.
%^$The Buckeyes held an early 5-2 lead in game one before Cleveland State cut the margin to 5-4 on kills by Bable and Smith and a solo block by Deirdre Laney. OSU scored the next seven points to take a 14-4 lead. A hitting error by OSU and a kill by Viking Stacy Melaragno made the score 14-6. A hitting error by OSU and a kill by Stacy Melaragno cut the lead to 14-6, but an ace serve by Stearns finished the game at 15-6. The Buckeyes hit .192 for the game to .000 for Cleveland State.
%^$Game two saw the Vikings take a 3-1 lead on consecutive kills by Bable, Smith and Kerri Van Deusen. OSU rallied to go up 5-4 and then Cleveland State tied the match at five on an OSU error. The Buckeyes ran the next eight points to take a 13-5 lead before a block by Smith and Bable and an ace serve by Laney closed the margin to 13-7. Ohio State responded with a solo block by Stearns and a kill by Snow to finished the game at 15-7. OSU hit .526 for the game to .111 for the Vikings.
%^$Cleveland State stayed close in game three and with OSU up 11-9 saw four consecutive OSU hitting errors give the Vikings a 13-11 lead. OSU closed the margin to 13-12 on a block by Laura Stalling and Snow. Cleveland State went to 14-12 on a hitting error by the Buckeyes and were serving for the game. Stalling’s solo block was good for a side out and Snows solo block on an overpass made the score 14-13. Following an exchange of sideouts, Flynn’s kill tied the game at 14. Another exchange of sideouts was followed by a Cleveland State timeout. Cavanaugh and Stearns blocked for point to put OSU up 15-14 and a Stearn’s kill ended the game at 16-14. The Vikings hit .213 for the game to .169 for the Buckeyes.
%^$Ohio State hit .236 for the match to .133 for the Vikings. The Buckeyes had a 12-4 margin in blocks and outserved Cleveland State 10-3 in aces. The Vikings had the edge in digs, 39-36.%^$
