Volleyball Handles Pittsburgh 3-0 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Behind a match-high 19 kills by outside hitter Rosie Snow, the 14th-ranked Ohio State (6-2) women’s volleyball team defeated Pittsburgh (4-5) in three straight games, 15-7, 15-7, 15-8. Buckeyes Dana Stearns and Angelee Abbring added nine kills each while Jen Flynn had seven and Shellye Sills five. Leading Pittsburgh in kills was Jenna Birkel with nine with Stacy Renick and Melissa Alpers adding seven each.
The Panthers opened a 3-0 lead in game one, but OSU scored the next six points. With Ohio State up 6-4, back-to-back kills by Abbring and a Pitt hitting error put the Buckeyes up 9-4. Pittsburgh closed to 9-7 on a block by Birkel and Renick and a solo by Birkel. Ohio State scored the final six points to win the game 15-7, with the final two points coming off Panther errors. OSU hit .375 in the game to .086 for Pittsburgh.
Game two started with Pittsburgh holding 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 leads. OSU then scored five consecutive points to take a 7-3 lead. The Buckeyes were ahead 8-3, before three OSU errors and a Pitt ace serve by Marcia Thiesen cut the margin to 8-7. OSU’s Snow then took over scoring five of her eight kills in the game to put the Buckeyes up 11-7. The Buckeyes closed the game out at 15-7. In all Snow had eight kills in 11 attempts and one ace serve in the game. Ohio State hit a game high .387 while Pittsburgh hit .269.
Ohio State held a 2-0 lead in game three before Pitt scored three consecutive points. The Buckeyes tied the game at four and five before a kill by Abbring, a block by Abbring and Stearns and a Anne Botica ace put OSU up 8-5. A kill by Sills and a Pitt hitting error pushed the lead to 10-5. Pitt made it 11-8, but the Buckeyes scored four consecutive points ending the game on a Flynn ace serve at 15-8. OSU hit .324 for the game on 20 kills with Pittsburgh hitting .171.
For the match, the Buckeyes hit .360 to .167 for the Panthers. Each squad had 29 digs, while OSU had nine blocks to seven for Pittsburgh. Buckeye Abbring had a career high five assist blocks with Sills adding four. Botica and Snow each had a team high six digs with Botica adding a match high two ace serves. Pittsburgh setter Tara Haefner had a match high 10 digs with her 29 assists.
The Buckeyes closes out the current home stand Sunday when the host Cleveland State at 2 p.m. 1994 National Player of the Year Laura Davis will be honored before the game with an All-American banner. Parking for the match will be limited to around Ohio Stadium and the west river bank due to the campus-wide move-in day for fall classes. Admission for the Pittsburgh is free.
