Volleyball Defeats Marshall – Ohio State Buckeyes

Behind a season-high team hitting percentage of .473 (31 kills, 5 errors, 55 attempts), 14th-ranked Ohio State (5-2) defeated Marshall (4-6) in three straight games (15-1, 15-3, 15-1) Tuesday night in St. John Arena. Ohio State’s Dana Stearns scored a match-high nine kills while hitting .600 (9-0-15) with Anne Botica adding six kills and hitting .750 (6-0-8). For Marshall, Wendy Williams had four kills with Jessica Downs and Jenni Corbin adding two each.
Ohio State opened game one by scoring the first 12 points of the match. The 15-1 game had OSU hitting .381 to Marshall’s -.095. The Buckeyes were up 3-0 in game two when Marshall closed the gap to 3-2. OSU scored the next six points to take a 9-2 lead. A Buckeye hitting error made the score 9-3 and OSU closed out the game scoring the next six points. A run of 10 consecutive points for Ohio State opened game three. An OSU service error ended the string and allowed Marshall their only point of the game by Lisa Didiodato. The Buckeyes followed with a side out and scored five consecutive points to finish the game at 15-1.
For the match, Ohio State hit .473 to -.053 for the Thundering Herd. The Buckeye had the advantage in aces, eight to zero and in digs, 22 to 18. Each team recorded one block.
Buckeye Dana Stearns picked up three ace serves in the match while Botica and Jen Flynn each had a team high six digs. Marshall’s Wendy Williams had a match high seven digs for the Thundering Herd.
Ohio State continues at home this week with a match tomorrow against Pittsburgh (4-4) at 7 p.m. The Buckeyes close out the home stand on Sunday against Cleveland State at 2 p.m. 1994 National Player of the Year Laura Davis will be honored before the game with an All-American banner. Parking for the match will be limited to around Ohio Stadium and the west river bank due to the campus-wide move-in day for fall classes. Admission for the Pittsburgh is free.
