No. 4 Nebraska Wins Buckeye Invitational – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Fourth-ranked Nebraska (6-0) won the 1998 Buckeye Invitational with a 3-0 (15-8, 15-3, 15-10) win over 14th-ranked Ohio State (4-2) Saturday evening in St. John Arena. In the third place match, Oregon State (7-1) outlasted Xavier (6-2) in five games (14-16, 15-13, 15-8, 14-16, 17-15).
%^$Despite having no player with more than eight kills, a balanced Nebraska attack proved to be too much for the Buckeyes. Tonia Tauke (8), Jaime Krondak (7), Nancy Meendering (6) and Angie Oxley (6) held court for the Cornhuskers, while Megan Korver had a match high six assist blocks. Oxley added a match-high three ace serves with Krondak adding two. Setter Fiona Nepo had 30 assists for the winners.
%^$Ohio State shared match-high kill honors between Dana Stearns and Jen Flynn with 15 each. Brianne Spiers (1-2), Stearns (0-3) and Carey Cavanaugh (1-2) contributed three blocks each while Stearns had a team high six digs. Cavanaugh, who started at setter, picked up 32 assists.
%^$Nebraska opened up a 7-1 lead in game one and extended it to 10-3. The Buckeyes closed the gap to 13-8 on a block by Cavanaugh and Stearns, but a OSU hitting error and a kill by Nepo finished the game, 15-8 for Nebraska. The Cornhuskers hit .357 for the game to OSU’s .089.
%^$Game two saw Nebraska take a 6-1 lead. The Buckeyes cut the lead to 6-3 but the Cornhuskers finished out the game scoring the next nine points to with 15-8. Nebraska hit .500 with only one error to OSU’s -.125.
%^$Nebraska moved to a 4-0 lead in game three before a Stearns kills put OSU on the scoreboard. With OSU trailing 6-4, kills by Flynn and Stearns tied the match at six. OSU tied the match again at seven on a block by Angelee Abbring and Spiers. Two OSU errors put Nebraska up 9-7 and a solo block by Katie Jahnke made the lead 10-7. Nebraska held a 13-8 lead before kills by Flynn and Stearns closed the gap to 13-10. Following a Cornhusker timeout, Nebraska scored on an OSU error and an ace serve by Jahnke to finish the game at 15-10, winning the match 3-0.
%^$Nebraska hit .337 for the match to OSU’s .117 with the Buckeyes scoring 46 kills to 39. The Cornhuskers had 12 team blocks to seven for OSU with each team picking up 31 digs. Nebraska outaced the Buckeyes seven to two.
%^$Ohio State returns to action next Tuesday as they face Marshall and play Pittsburgh on Wednesday. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. The Buckeyes close out the homestand with a 2 p.m. match next Sunday against Cleveland State.
