No. 14 Buckeyes Defeat Xavier 3-0 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – OSU’s Dana Stearns and Angelee Abbring had 10 kills each as Ohio State (4-1) defeated Xavier (6-1), 15-6, 15-7, 15-4 in one semifinal of the Buckeye Invitational in St. John Arena. Fourth ranked Nebraska (5-0) defeated Oregon State (6-1), 15-3, 15-9, 15-5, in the first semifinal to set up and Ohio State-Nebraska championship match at 7 p.m. Saturday. Oregon State and Xavier will play for third place at 5 p.m.
Xavier had an early 3-0 in game one, but the Buckeyes scored the next eight points and allowed Xavier only three points in the rest of the match. Nine OSU points came off of Xavier errors. OSU hit .375 to .129 for the game.
Ohio State had 4-0 and 8-1 leads in game two before Xavier closed to 9-5. With the score 11-7, two kills by Angelee Abbring an Xavier error and an ace serve by Anne Botica closed the game at 15-7. The Buckeye hit .158 in the game to .100 for Xavier.
After a 1-1 tie in game three, OSU took a 5-1 lead. Xavier scored to make it 5-2, but the Buckeyes scored the next nine points to reach match point at 14-2. An ace serve by Amanda Poeppelman and an OSU hitting error made the score 14-4. OSU on its third match point closed the match on an Xavier ball handling error at 15-4. Ohio State outhit Xavier .296 to .032.
For Ohio State Brianne Spiers had a match high four blocks (one solo and three assists) while Nikki Cisco recorded a career-high seven digs. Jen Flynn picked up 29 assists with her and Nikki Cisco recording two ace serves each.
Xavier had a team-high nine kills by Beth Osterday with Sara Bachus collecting six digs. Gabrielle Cook recorded two assist blocks with Tami Ores recording 20 assists.
For the match OSU hit .258 to .088 for Xavier. The Buckeyes had the edge in blocks, 8-2, digs, 35-29 and kills, 40-33. Xavier outserved Ohio State five to four, but had 19 service errors.
