Women’s Volleyball Falls to Florida 3-1 In NCAA Second Round – Ohio State Buckeyes

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Ohio State (17-14) put Florida (33-2) to the test, but fell short losing in four games (15-5, 13-15, 16-14, 15-12) in the second round of the NCAA Championship played in Gainesville, Fla. The Buckeyes after losing game one, outlasted the Gators in game two, and served for game three twice, but lost 16-14. Ohio State held a 7-6 lead in game four before Florida went ahead, 13-9. OSU closed to 13-12, but could not stop Florida for the win. Ohio State’s Rosie Snow scored a match-high 31 kills for Ohio State with Dana Stearns adding 15, Angelee Abbring 14 and Anne Botica 13 while Jen Flynn and Nikki Cisco had a match-high 18 digs each. Jenny Manz of Florida had a team high 28 kills with Heather Wright adding 16, Jenni Keene 13 and Jeni Jones 10. The Gator win advances Florida to the NCAA East Regional next week.
Ohio State opened game one with a 2-0 lead on kills by Abbring and Snow. The Buckeyes expanded that margin to 4-1 with an ace serve by Stearns and an overpass kill by Flynn. Florida responded by scoring the next nine points and with a Snow kill had a 10-5 lead. The Gators closed the game with four consecutive points on solo blocks by Wright and Sanchez and kills by Wright and Jerilyn Hattendorf. Florida hit .421 for the game to OSU’s .195.
The Buckeyes trailed 2-1 before a kill by Abbring and two blocks by Abbring and Brianne Spiers put OSU up 4-2. Florida, with a kill by Manz and three OSU errors, went ahead 6-4 and an ace by OSU’s Cisco cut the lead to one at 6-5. With Florida ahead 9-7, a Gator error and an Abbring kill tied the match at nine. A Botica kill and a Florida error for point put OSU ahead 11-9. After an OSU error for point closed the gap to 11-10, an OSU block by Stearns and Snow made the score 12-10 OSU. Florida came back to tie the game at 12 on a Manz kill and a block by Jeni Jones and Manz. The Buckeyes took the lead again on an Abbring-Spiers block and a ace serve by Snow to set up game point at 14-12. An OSU error sided out to Florida but an Abbring kill set up game point two. Another OSU error sided out to Florida, but a Botica kill set up game point three. A Florida kill by Wright sided out and an OSU error closed the OSU lead to 14-13. After a Buckeye time out, a Botica kill set up game point four, but a kill by Keene sided out once again to Florida. Snow’s kill set up game point five and another kill by Snow gave OSU the game at 15-13 tying the match at one game each. It marked only the fourth game Florida has lost at home all season. The Buckeyes hit .278 for the game to .229 for Florida.
Florida scored the first five points of game three, but the Buckeyes responded with five consecutive points to tie the match. Florida went ahead 7-5 but OSU responded to tie the game at seven. The Gators again went ahead by two, 9-7, but the Buckeyes on two kills by Snow and an ace by Stearns took a 10-9 lead. An OSU error allowed Florida to tie the match at 10 and a solo block by Manz put the Gators up 11-10. A Florida error tied the match for OSU at 11 but a solo block by Sanchez put the Gators up 12-11. Following an OSU time out, the Buckeyes scored three consecutive points on a block by Stearns and Flynn and consecutive kills by Flynn to set up game point at 14-12. An OSU error sided the ball out to Florida, but a Stearns kill set up game point two for OSU. Florida sided out on a kill by Jones and then scored four consecutive points on a Manz kill and three Buckeye errors to escape with a 16-14 Gator win. Florida hit .259 in the game to .203 for OSU.
Ohio State opened game four with a 2-0 lead and expanded it to 5-3. Florida scored points on an OSU error, a kill by Jones and a block by Manz and Wright to take a 6-5 lead. The Buckeyes tied the match at six on a block by Spiers and Snow and a kill by Snow put the Buckeyes ahead 7-6. A solo block by Jones and another block by Jones and Keene gave Florida the lead at 8-7. The Gators expanded an 11-9 lead to 13-9 on an OSU error and a ace by Hattendorf. OSU cut the lead to 13-11 on a block by Botica and Stearns and a Gator hitting error and were within one at 13-12 on a Snow kill. After several sideouts, a solo block by Hattendorf and an ace serve by Manz closed the game at 15-12. Florida hit .180 for the game to .145 for OSU.
For the match Florida hit .263 to .204 for the Buckeyes. The Gators outblocked OSU 16 to 13 with the Buckeyes having the edge in digs, 79 to 73 and in ace serves, six to five.
