Women’s Volleyball Defeats Northwestern 15-5, 15-2, 15-9 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State (16-13 overall, 9-11 Big Ten) closed out the regular season with a 15-5, 15-2, 15-9 win over Northwestern (15-17, 5-15) Saturday in St. John Arena in front of a crowd of 1,073. OSUs Dana Stearns scored a match-high 15 kills with Rosie Snow and Angelee Abbring adding 12 each and Anne Botica recording a career-high 10. NUs Jessica Holloway had a team high 14 kills for the Wildcats with Jennifer Zagorski adding eight.
The Buckeyes await Sundays announcement of the NCAA tournament field to see if they will be included in the tournament field for the 10th consecutive year.
Northwestern held a 2-0 lead in game one before OSU took a 4-3 lead on a Botica ace serve. The Buckeyes ran the lead to 10-3. Northwestern countered with ace serves by Melissa Doan and Liz Renius to make the score 11-5. An OSU block by Snow and Shellye Sills followed by an Abbring kill put the Buckeyes up 13-5. Two Wildcat errors finished the game for OSU at 15-5. The Buckeyes hit .357 for the game to .289 for Northwestern.
Ohio State scored the first five points of game two and quickly built up a 10-1 lead. OSU continued to add to the lead and a Stearns kill set game point at 14-1. Northwestern sided out and an OSU error made it 14-2. A Stearns kill set up the second game point, but a kill by Zagorski sided out to the Wildcats. A Sills kill set up the third game point and a block by Sills and Snow ended the game at 15-2. OSU hit .462 for the game to .069 for Northwestern.
Kills by OSUs Botica and Stearns and an NU hitting error opened a 3-0 lead for the Buckeyes in game three. Two OSU errors cut the lead to 3-2. At 4-3 OSU scored the next five points on two kills by Stearns, a kill by Botica, a block by Botica and Stearns and a solo block by Stearns. A Leah Ackerman kill cut the lead to 9-4, but a block by Abbring and Sills and an ace serve by Snow pushed the lead to 11-4. Northwestern countered with two ace serve by Zagorski and three OSU errors to close the gap to 12-9. Snows second ace serve made it 13-9 and another block by Abbring-Sills set up match point at 14-9. NUs Doan sided out with a kill but Abbrings kill returned the serve to Ohio State for the second match point. Boticas career high 10th kill ended the game at 15-9 for the OSU win. Ohio State hit .462 for the game to .178 for Northwestern.
For the match Ohio State hit .421, its third best percentage of the season, to Northwesterns .188. The Buckeyes had a six-five edge in aces serves with Snow and Botica scoring two each. OSU outdug NU, 43 to 28 with Snow collecting a match-high 14. Ohio State controlled the net with 12 blocks to one for Northwestern. Sills recorded a match high seven assist blocks with Snow, Stearns and Abbring adding four assists each.
