Women’s Volleyball Defeats Hoosiers 15-8, 15-9, 15-10 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State (15-13 overall, 8-11 Big Ten) played an excellent match in defeating Indiana (16-12, 9-10) 15-8, 15-9, 15-10 Friday night in St. John Arena. Rosie Snow (15 kills, .500), Dana Stearns (12 kills, .545, 10 digs, eight blocks) and Angelee Abbring (12 kills, .261) combined for 39 kills to secure the win. Melissa Rooney had a team-high 13 kills for the Hoosiers with Jennifer Magelssen adding eight.
Ohio State took a early 2-0 lead in game one. An IU block by Cydryce Carter and Kristina Sanderson cut the lead to 2-1, but the Buckeyes scored seven consecutive points to lead 9-1. Ohio State extended the lead to 12-2. IU scored the next three points to make the lead 12-5, before an Anne Botica kill made it 13-5. An ace by Erin Heimann and a solo block by Sanderson cut further into the lead at 13-7. OSU’s block by Botica and Stearns scored OSU’s 14th point. Indiana responded with a kill by Carter to cut the lead to 14-8, but an IU service error returned the serve to OSU and a Hoosier ball handling error was game point at 15-8. The Buckeyes hit .387 for the game to .089 for the Hoosiers.
Indiana opened game two with a 4-0 lead on an ace by Heimann, a kill by Sanderson, a block by Carter and Ryann Connors and a OSU hitting error. Ohio State countered with the next eight points including three kills and two solo blocks by Stearns. Indiana scored the next five points with kills by Connors, Carter and Rooney along with two OSU errors to cut the lead to 10-9. Following an IU service error, a Botica kill, an IU ball handling call and a block by Botica and Stearns put the Buckeyes up 13-9. Following an exchange of sideouts, Ohio State reached game point on a kill by Stearns and won the game on a Stearns-Botica block. OSU hit .342 in the game to .244 for IU.
The Hoosiers had a 2-0 lead in game three on a kill by Walter and an ace serve from Connors. OSU tied the match on back-to-back blocks by Shellye Sills and Abbring and Sills and Botica. Two IU errors put the Buckeyes up 4-2. OSU ran the next three points on a kills by Snow, an ace by Stearns and following an IU timeout, another kill by Snow. After exchanging sideouts, two IU errors and a Snow kill put the lead at 10-2. Following a pair of sideouts, two kills by Abbring put the Buckeye lead at 12-2. IU responded with a kill and an ace serve by Jennifer Magelssen to cut the lead to 12-4. An ace serve by OSU’s Snow put the score at 13-4. Following an IU timeout and kill by Magelssen, two ace serves by Carter and two OSU errors cut the margin to 13-8. After an OSU timeout and an IU serving error, the Buckeyes reached match point on an IU error. A kill by Amanda Welter stopped match point one and an OSU error cut the lead to 14-9. Abbring’s sideout kill set up match point two, but Magelssen’s kill stopped the possible winner. Another sideout kill by Stearns set up the third match point which IU countered with a kill by Rooney. Carter and Sanderson combined for a block for point to make the score 14-10. A Hoosier service error set up OSU’s fourth match point which proved to be the winner on an IU hitting error. Ohio State hit .353 for the game to .114 for Indiana. For the match, Ohio State hit .359 (best hitting percentage in the last 13 matches) to IU’s .146. OSU recorded 13 blocks to five for Indiana. Leading OSU in blocks was Stearns with eight (2-6) with Jen Flynn adding five (2-3) and Abbring and Sills four assists each. IU’s Sanderson had four (1-3). The Buckeyes outdug the Hoosiers, 55 to 32 with four OSU players recording double figures. Leading the team with 11 each were Brianne Spiers and Botica while Stearns and Flynn had 10 apiece. Hoosier Cydryce Carter had a team high nine digs for Indiana. IU did score an edge in aces serves with seven to OSU’s four. Both Carter and Heimann had two for the Hoosiers.
Ohio State hosts Northwestern Saturday at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena while Indiana travels to Penn State.
