COLUMBUS, Ohio – After a challenging fall preseason, the men’s golf team looks to improve its play before the real season begins in February.%^$

%^$”The team was disappointed this fall, we did not perform like we thought we would. We had great qualifying scores but we just didn’t shoot as consistently as we should have in the tournaments,” head coach Jim Brown said. %^$

%^$The Buckeyes will be involved in an extensive weight training program this winter as well as an aerobic training regimen. They will also be practicing their games inside, working especially hard on driving and putting, Brown said. “We really need to%^$work on our driving and putting this winter,” he said. “We just weren’t driving the ball %^$consistently and were taking way too many putts.” %^$

%^$The key Buckeyes who have earned varsity status going into the spring season are senior Al Hromulak (Johnstown, Pa.),%^$Mike Austin (So., Burton, Mich.), David Wagenseller (Fr., Wilmington, Ohio),%^$and transfer Chris Emanuel (So., Ottumwa, Iowa).%^$

%^$The Buckeyes also will work to find a consistent fifth man to compete after three different golfers played at that spot%^$this fall. Among the players working to make the traveling squad are junior Andrew%^$Montooth (Bexley, Ohio), Noah Lucas (Fr., Worthington, Ohio), and sophomore%^$Danny Janson (Grand Rapids, Mich.). %^$

%^$With only two golfers with collegiate experience, Brown says he is working with the most inexperienced team he has ever had in%^$his 26 years as head coach. He said the inexperience came into play at the challenging%^$fall tournaments. “Because we did so well last year, we qualified for the top preseason%^$tournaments. Everytime we teed it up this fall, we were going up against the Top 15 teams%^$in the nation,” Brown said. The Buckeyes will continue facing tough competition in the%^$spring as they begin the season Feb. 13-14, 1999 at the Gator Invitational in Gainesville,%^$Fla.%^$
