Volleyball Falls to No. 2 Penn State – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State (12-12 overall, 5-10 Big Ten) dropped a 3-0 decision (15-5, 15-9, 15-9) to second-ranked Penn State (25-0, 15-0) Wednesday night in St. John Arena. Behind a co-match-high 12 kills by Chirsty Cochran and nine by Lindsey Anderson, the Nittany Lions had a team hitting percentage of .300 and recorded 11 team blocks in the win. OSU’s Rosie Snow had co-match-high 12 kills and 10 digs with Dana Stearns adding 10 kills and Carey Cavanaugh 11 digs.
Penn State held 2-0 and 4-1 leads in game one before OSU kills by Anne Botica and Rosie Snow and a hitting error by Lindsey Anderson tied the game at four. The Buckeyes took a 5-4 lead on a kill by Angelee Abbring, but failed to score the rest of the game. Four kills for points by Christy Cochran, one by Lindsey Anderson, another by Emily Stout and two assist blocks by Cochran and Emily combined with three OSU errors closed the game, 15-5 for Penn State. The Nittany Lions had only one hitting error in the game, hitting .438 to OSU’s .167.
The Buckeyes opened game two with a solo block by Snow on Lauren Cacciamani for a 1-0 lead. Penn State responded with kills by Stout and Anderson and two OSU errors to go up 4-1. With three kills by OSU’s Snow, a hitting error by Anderson and a ball handling call against Bonnie Bremner, the Buckeyes went up 7-4. The Nittany Lions tied the game at seven with a kill by Cacciamani and two OSU errors. A solo block by Botica and a Snow kill gave OSU a 9-7 lead and forced a time out from Penn State. After a side out by Anderson, she combined with Cacciamani for a block for point. That was followed by an overpass kill by Cochran to tie the game at nine. Penn State took the lead on an Anderson kills and went up 12-9 on two OSU errors. Another OSU error put the PSU lead at 13-9 and a block by Bremner and Cacciamani on Snow set game point for the Nittany Lions at 14-9. OSU stopped three game points on kills by Abbring, Snow and Botica, but a service error by Dana Stearns returned the ball to the Nittany Lions and a blocking error by OSU ended the game at 15-9. Penn State hit .275 for the game to .048 for OSU.
Penn State quickly took an 8-0 lead in game three on an ace by Stout, a kill by Bremner, a block by Stout and Anderson and five OSU errors. A hitting error by Bremner gave OSU its first point while another OSU error made the score 9-1. The Buckeyes then used two ace serves by Snow, a kill by Snow and a Penn State error to cut the lead to 10-5. With the score 11-5, OSU scored four consecutive points on a kill by Laura Stalling, a block by Stalling and Botica and two Penn State errors to trail 11-9. Cochran’s kill returned the serve to Penn State scored four consecutive points on two OSU errors, a kill by Anderson and a block by Anderson and Cacciamani to end the match with a 15-9 game three win. Penn State hit .179 for the game to OSU’s -.091.
For the match Penn State hit .300 to OSU’s .045. The Nittany Lions recorded 11 blocks to four for OSU. The Buckeyes had the edge in digs, 43 to 30 and had two aces to one for Penn State.
Both Emily Stout and Lauren Cacciamani recorded five assist blocks with Lindsey Anderson adding four. OSU’s Anne Botica had a solo and an assist block to lead OSU.
