COLUMBUS, Ohio — For the second time in three weeks the Ohio State men’s golf team will be pitted against some of the best collegiate golf competition in the country.
Head coach Jim Brown and his young squad will travel to Dallas for the Red River Classic, hosted by the University of Texas.
Brown will hold qualifying all this week in Columbus for two spots on the five-man traveling squad.
Senior Al Hromulak (Johnstown, Pa.), sophomore Chris Emanuel (Ottumwa, Iowa) and freshman David Wagenseller (Wilmington, Ohio) have secured traveling spots based on their efforts during the first tournament of the fall season, the Ping/Golfweek NCAA Preview held in Minneapolis Sept 28-29.
Hromulak finished tied for 16th in that event followed by Emanuel (T 42nd) and Wagenseller (T 54).
Brown said his team will have its difficulties over the course of the fall season in preparation for the spring.
The Buckeyes faced a similar situation last year in the fall before going on to finish No. 6 in the country during NCAA competition last spring.
Ohio State competed in three fall tournaments last year. The Buckeyes finished T 13th, 11th and tied for eighth in those events. In the spring of last season OSU won two events and finished fourth in four others.
The 1998 Red River Classic will be held at the Dallas Athletic Club (6,766, Par 72).
Arizona, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Houston, New Mexico, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, South Carolina, USC, SMU, Texas, Texas A&M, TCU and Wake Forest make up the field.
Individuals that will highlight the event include 1998 U.S. Amateur champion Hank Kuehne of SMU, 1998 Jack Nicklaus College Player of the Year Bryce Molder of Georgia Tech and 1998 Masters and U.S. Open participant Matt Kuchar of Georgia Tech.
The 1997 Red River Champion, Hunter Haas of Oklahoma, also is expected to defend his title.
Texas and Oklahoma St. have each won the event three times. Texas-El Paso, Arkansas, Wake Forest and Arizona have won once.
Practice rounds will take place Sunday. Teams will play 36 holes Monday and 18 Tuesday.
